The atom is a basic unit of MATTER consisting of a dense, central NUCLEUS (esentially positive ) surrounded by a  NEGATIVELY CHARGED ELECTRONS . AS IS EVIDENT FROM ABOVE IT IS AN ELECTRICALLY NEUTRAL SPECIES..................this is the basic definition though nowadays some scientists refuse to accept it as the basic unit!

hiii

Atoms are composed of sub-atomic particles.

The most well known of these are electrons, protons and in all cases apart from standard hydrogen,

neutrons.

Of these particles it is believe that electrons are basic although recent research suggests there could be more to electrons than meets the eye.

In terms of protons and neutrons these are composed of three quarks, which themselves come in

different sorts, usually called flavours, of which there are six, up,down, strange, charm, top, bottom  !!!!!

Atoms are the smallest unit of matter capable of independent existence.
