Divalent cations like those of calcium and magnesium, carbonates, sulphates n on using soap, they give the corresponding salt. No lather formation.

Salts of calcium and magnisium are responsible for hardness of water. The bicarblonate of these cations gives temprory hardness (removed by heating/acid treatment)Hallides, sulphate, nitrate etc cause permanent hardness.(Banana Republic carbonates are not responsible for hardness as they are insoluble in water)
