BOOKS TO FOLLOW FOR IITJEE
| Books to follow | ![]() |
Now lets talk about the books you can refer to for your preparation. (One important thing: if some book has not been mentioned in our list, you can safely assume that it is definitely not the best book for JEE preparation - this is because we have scoured the market for every available book, and we have more or less a very good idea about the best ones available, all of which we will mention here.)
PHYSICS
The good books available in the market are:
| (a) Resnick and Halliday: | Physics (Vols I and II) |
| (b) H C Verma: | Concepts in Physics (Vols I and II ) |
| (c) I E Irodov: | Problems in Physics |
You can use either (a) or (b) to study the conceptual part form any topic, and then do the exercises on that topic from the same book, until you feel you are very comfortable with the topic. For complete understanding, you could even read the same chapter from both (a) and (b).
Only after you’ve done all the unsolved questions and exercises from (a) and/or (b) should you proceed to (c). Irodov is famous among JEE aspirants for containing extremely tough problems. Of course, the problems are not easy, but they are definitely not "extremely tough", and we would strongly advise you to do the relevant questions from Irodov for any particular topic to gain mastery over that topic. Simply put, being able to solve Irodov’s questions indicates that one’s physics is good enough for JEE.
It goes without saying that previous years JEE questions must be solved too.
CHEMISTRY
The books we suggest are:
| (a) Organic Chemistry: | Morrison and Boyd (Relevant parts) Solomons (Relevant parts) I L Finnar (Relevant parts) Peter Sykes (Relevant parts) |
| (b) Inorganic Chemistry: | NCERT J D Lee (Relevant parts) |
| (c) Physical Chemistry: | NCERT Atkins (Relevant parts) {Any other available book/study material for practice purposes} |
You will see the phrase "relevant parts" against most of the mentioned books. This is because these books have been written by foreign authors and are therefore not JEE-specific. To decide the relevant parts from any book, just refer to the JEE brochure (available online too).
For chemistry, in particular, students tend to study a lot of irrelevant stuff. For example, we’ve seen students trying to memorize extremely obscure exceptions in organic chemistry or mug up the minutest details of some extraction process in inorganic chemistry. To emphasize once again, you must not fall into this pit. To avoid wastage of time (and brains), you are advised to do only JEE-relevant study.
Finally, a good teacher greatly helps in chemistry. And if you didn’t know, chemistry is the most scoring of all the three subjects.
