IIT JEE COUNSELLING AND AFTERMATH............Also Details about IIT Kanpur

JEE results are out and those who are satisfied with their performance in JEE10 must be having an excellent time at home.....mostly you must be picking up calls from relatives, friends, teachers and acquaintance and meeting new people at home it is an extreme feeling which I can understand.

But it is also a new phase of your life.CH-1 Schooling of your life ends here and now you all are mature enough to decide what to choose as your career but then what the hell I am going to write. The point is that in this happiness of cracking JEE you might get a little quick and choose subject which you might regret later.I have seeing many people who regret taking a course later even those people who have taken CS and EE.

IIT COUNSELLING :

You all must be soon getting a counselling letter from respective jee office and so what you must be doing after 2 days is to start deciding about your career.I can now divide the people who crack JEE into 3 category :

1 : People who got good rank and will opt for time-tested streams

2 : People who got not-so good rank and will take whatever they get.Their sole aim was to crack IIT and now that their dream has been fulfilled they are aimless and will take whatever they get.All they need is the tag of IIT which they have got

3 : People who dont give a damn about what others think about a stream which they have decided before and they dont need anyones advice.Their choice is not a function of their rank .

Most of the qualifiers are from category 1 and 2. Category is next to extinct in  India.

Now I will say some straight forward points regarding different streams.

STREAM 1 : CS, EE

These streams as considered by Indians as " time-tested streams" are quite good even today and if you are from category 1 or 2 then you can wisely consider them. Now some of you will be spiritually enraised to go for different streams like Economics,Physics ,Maths etc. inspite of getting any rank(even under 100) just because you enjoyed them in class 11 and 12. Then for these chaps :-

1 : They are saluted by me for their enthuasism and their inclination towards a subject but then

2 : College science is quite different.Just as a student of class 10 who finds maths easy doesnt mean he will find class 11 and 12 maths easy. College science is a bit exhaustive and IF YOU ARE NOT REALLY PASSIONATE then please stay away. I find people who get F grade in maths and are in Maths department.God knows what Nash and what Carl Gauss will they make.

But if your God is someone like Feynmann then you can obviously take these courses but personally if you want to take these courses then go for some college like Stanford, Princeton as iits lack in the field of r and d.

. Now I will list some course about which i know and tell something about them.

1 : CS (Computer Science)

Firstly CS has very little to do with computers. Most of the course  is theoretical and if you think you will be able to understand how computer hardware work and that you will be able to hack a site after taking this course then you are mistaken. CS has many things which are mathematical and what you will study is about algorithms, discrete mathematics, compilers etc. programing is a very small part of CS and most of the thing you will have to study on your own.

But CS packages are always lucrative and in IITk itself this year saw 90-100% placement in CS and EE as i heard.

If you want to settle in foreign and work for some other country which most of you must have thought then also CS is a good option.

2 : EE(Electrical Eng)

A very mighty subject with loads to study but wide branch and infinite scope. You can go to power sector to telecom to constructing chips etc. The course is quite practical and there is enough knowledge to gain but there is lot to study

3: Mech eng.

Mech has nothing to do with mechanics that you study in class 12. Most of the course if about machines etc. with drawing courses here and there. like you will have to draw the shape of machines which can be detesful for someone like me.

Mech placement are average but never 0 nor very high at least as far as i know.girls can also opt for mech as they will have very little problem in studying it but i dont know what will happen in practical world.

4 : Aero , Metallurgy, civil

I have very less knowledge about them .

5 : Phy , Chem ,Math ,Eco , BSBE

please read what i wrote before the topic CS. BSBE is quite good in the sense that if one is really interested then there is good R&D scope.

WHAT TO CHOOSE COLLEGE OR STREAM?

I would straight forward say STREAM. Also dont choose a college by its location, I mean if given a chance to study in MIT i am ready to sleep and eat even in a jail - dont know about you. Also dont waste life for 4 yrs.

MY PARENTS WANT ME TO STUDY course XYZ and I WANT TO STUDY ABC?

Well note that it is you who have  spent the life with the stream not your parent but dont be to resentful as they have their own ideology and they know more than you ex: in my case i wanted to study physics but my parents wanted me to study cs. But later my interest for phy diminished and i found CS quite interesting and also good from money point of view.

So better discuss your thoughts with your parent.

MY RANK IS QWE and I WANT TO KNOW WHAT I CAN GET?

This qs means you have no single interest so you can obviously see factors like money, opportunity or even family-tradition.

Now some facts about IIT KANPUR

IIT KANPUR

ups

1 : highly academic environment which can be stressful sometime

2 : Good facility and hostel life is quite open to enjoyment

3: Most of the proffesors are higly qualified and trained and few of them are even excellent

4 : Our seniors say that iitk trains you in a way that whenver you go to anywhere in the world you only have to lower you level. This sounds interesting but i dont know how true it is.

5 : IITK has the highest academic standard even better than iitb. A physics course which is completed in 4 months in iitb is completed in 2months in iitk .Par usme hawa nikal jaati hain But thats a different story.

down

1: you might find iitk interfering with your private life like there is a physical exercise in 1st yr at 6am. It is good for health but you might find as unwanting

2 : you will have lots to study ..i really mean lot and sometime you might have to memorize thing even if you are AIR-1.  If you are not determined or you are the one who studied under pressure then you might find yourself getting distanced from study as hostel life might lead to late night movies and missing classes,

3 : Kanpur is the worlds dirtiest city no doubt. there is no airport in kanpur and even the road facility from kanpur to iitk is "RAM Bharose". So if you want to enjoy life then iitk is not a stop for you better take iitb or iitd.

AFTERMATH

I might sound idiot but I think one should not just enter into an IIT. So in your free time i think you should do the following :

1 : Take a full rest and visit some place.

2 : Take a good counselling and get everything ready for the counselling

3 : Study some programming language especially C or Java.

4 : Just revise +2 maths before coming rest enjoy karo........................

And also get outside of your JEE attitude and enjoyment before coming to college....world is bigger than an exam and now you will learn it. There will be no coaching here and so rely totally on yourself to study- proffs are not coaching teacher. Also here there will be no quota , no Kota,no coaching etc........everyone will be equal and so the test of real talent will begin then......

Sorry for the previous one.1. Engineering is COMPLETElY different from what you studies for JEE. Believe me when I say that not even 1% of those getting into IIT know what engineering is. 2. Before choosing your branch, open the respective IIT's website and search for your department. The department has a list of courses, with brief introduction, which you should read.3. If you are getting into IIT, just for the tag, well... lets face it, this is how the world acts. Now, lets divide this in 2 categories:a) those who know what they want and sure that they will continue with this stream even after passing out. b) people who are unsure about their future plansfor category a) -> preference to branch and NOT placefor category b) -> a proper combination of both, never give preference only to the place. The branch does matter.Talking about placements, the older IITs (bombay, kanpur, delhi, madras in specific) have an upper edge from your counterparts in the same dept in some other IIT. And what is the difference between IITs and other colleges. Its not just the studies, its the environment. The development of your personality and your confidence as an individual. So, if you are sure that you will not go into any technical stuff after getting your UG degree, then go for some IIT. For the others, think carefully because this decides your course of life.
