IS LIFE POSSIBLE ON MARS
British experts on December 19, 2002, Put on a display a robot lander that could settle one of the most pressing questions in space science today ; does life , or the potential for it exist on MARS ?
The probe BEAGLE 2 will be placed abroad a European Space Agency spacecraft , Mars Express , which is set to blast off from RUSSIA's BAIKONUR launchpad in KAZAKSTAN on May 23, 2003.
If all goes well , in December 2003 , the mother ship will drop off it's tiny golden baby as it finally nears the RED PLANET.
On board is an array of instruments which , by the time BEAGLE 2's electrical heart expires six months later , could tell once and for all whether WATER , the stuff of terrestial life , is present on Mars , the Red Planet or not to solve this great puzzle.
And it could indicate on of the biggest mysteries of Science , whether MARTIAN rocks cantain the carbon isotopes or if it's atmosphere has traces of METHANE , the callingcards of biological life past or present.
"This is a device which is built to try and answer a very fundamental question ----- Is there life elsewhere in the Solar System." According to COLLIN PILLINGER , a professor of planetary science at Brithish Open University who is the main force behind BEAGLE 2 .
MARS
On the face of it , the cahnges are not good. The fourth planet from the sun is cold and dim compared to the Earth, which our home and the only known planet to have LIFE.
* It' teperature ranges from 20 degree celcius to a bleak of minus 140 degree centigrade
* it's atmosphere contains 95 percent of Carbon dioxide ;
* And it's topography of spectacular mountains , rugged valleys and plains is swept by violent dust storms.
