Well "Rates"
this question has turned out to be the most rising question at
goiit recently and I think there is only one answer to this.
When someone gets rates his/her altitude increases and
so the person with high altitudes come in top rated members
OR this months top memebers list.
The one who comes in that list means that this member is
good at solving doubts or answering questions.
So even if someone asks for rates there is no problem.
But the second and the most important part is that Rates
to be given to the person only if the answer given by him
/her is satisfactory = 2 ; gr8 = 5 !!!!!!!!

Yes,rates determine the altitude of a goiitian.Every goiitian want to improve his altitude to a blazing or at least a cool goiitian or else he/she would have left this forum as soon as he/she had joined.Do u get my point??Therefore almos all people in this forum want to get more ratings to improve their altitude and gain respect.I don't disencourage guys/gals who ask me for rating.It is good to rate them when u think that their articles or answers r perfect.In the begining I was also like that but now I have cooled down a bit but still I ask people to rate me if they find my answers or articles satisfactory.

Misunderstood.
Actually u become a cool or blazing or scorching goiitian not
on the basis of your altitude but on the basis of the numb.
of posts that you have posted.
If you complete (30-100) posts = cool goIITian
If you complete (100-200) posts = Hot goIITian
If you complete (200-300) posts = scorching goIITian
If you complete 300+ posts = Blazing goIITian.

rates are a good way of getting to know how our answers are perceived by others and how much are they benefecial to them and that was the best part of goiit when i joined it...it was really interesting and perhaps the best way to get active and healthy involvement of people ..making them think and giving good answers .there is absolutely no harm in asking rates if you think you have posted an answer correctly and surely deserve a rate for yuorwork....................BUT now goiit is slowly deviating away from its primary aim....members way of getting rates is just posting ACADEMIC articles and earning mighty salutes from fellow mates...there is also much of crap discussion going on like guys vs gal game and post jokes in the name of chilling and relaxing a bit from studies ...there are really few people who really have kept the name of GOIIT going ..others think it is like ORKUT and is just time pass people wasting time in nudgebooks and asking others to read their artcles and rate if they like . we all are not toppers and thats why we are here ...we all are wannabe iitians.... i hope my message gets conveyed ........and BEST OF LUCK TO ALL

well i'd like to say that there is nothing wrong in asking for rates by telling people about your post( i do myself so you may call this post as justification) as it is more about telling people that i have also posted something. however what is wrong is that people do give rates without reading or without thinking what they should give. there are many posts which do deserve a lot but because are not known are less rated while there are many which are rated just on the basis of the fact that the person who has written it is known to you.
rates about answers is perfectly explained by waterdemon. however i'd like to add a point that when good students of goiit answer they get rates as if its raining rates even for normal answers but when others give equally good answers and may not be known, they definitely get less rates
