Actually I talked to a friend here who left NIT-Surathkal Mechanical.His AIR was 42K!!But his state rank was 800.

well unfortunately...its true..... AIEEE is not solely on the basis of rank...its the state quota... every NIT has 50% seat for the state to which it belongs....and some definite no of seats for each of the rest states...and in AIEEE, u need to have better state rank than AIR...and because of this state-quota, ppl having even a lower AIR get better branches... and its really bad...esp with states like UP and rajasthan... where competition is quite high... some data vise, a rank of 5076 in UP was having state rank of 659... while a rank of 15k in punjab was having state rank of 315 ....and that in rajasthan an AIR of 4097 was having SR 900 sth...so u can urself see the difference!!

So approx. what AIR and state rank would I need ( from uttaranchal ) to get a good branch in any top 5 NIT's .........
and also plz tell me about the top institutes where NRI quota is available ( my dad is a NRI )...and the procedure etc .......

well AIRs vary evry year...so no one can tell in anyway....like this yr, with a rank of 5076 my state rank was 659...and 2-3 yrs ago...my frnd's rank in AIEEE was 5015, nd his SR was 880... so variation takes place every year also since uttaranchal is nt having a NIT in its state, ur rank shud be better than rest of the states (except UP and rajasthan)....to get a decenet branch in top NITs!!

THANKS MAGICLKO..........how can I know the opening and closing rank of my state and no. of seats reserved for uttaranchal in NIT's.....
also plz tell me about NRI quota ( my dad is a NRI ) if available in NIT's ....

well opening nd closing ranks differ evry year... it depends how many candidates r actually taking seats in the cllg... nd yeah thr is NRI quota in NITs, thr is sth called DASA , direct admission to south asians.... nd i dnt knw much about it...but thr is a scholarship exam calld 'spdc' whoch offfers some scholarship....but thr are many conditions with it...

well a gud news for ppl. in XI ...............
i hav heard that there is some kinda law passed by govt.
this year & will be in practise frm next yr.
It says that all NITs r institutes of national importance & hence there wont be any state quota........i.e.that 50%......will be no more.........there.
& also 4 one state in other NITs........

also, is it gonna be in practice from 2008 or 09?

Yaar actually my frnd told me abt. this thing..
That there is some kinda thing like INSTITUTES OF NATONAL IMPORTANCE....whose bill hav been passed
& ya its sure that it is not 4 this yr...... but I m not 100% sure abt. next yr
