         Pilani  Vs  Goa
Rate me after reading this

sub: Which is better bits pilani or bpgc
when u(seniors) saw this u might have come in with anger to point out that this has been discussed many times or Point me to the (awesome) article some common myths about engineering but this is not exactly a question so please read...

COMPARISION (not in any particular order)
1)LIFE AT BITS,INFRASTRUCTURE
a)GOA:-
atish kathpal:- Well life@BITS - single seated rooms...mordern architecture...resort like looks...internet facilities in each room...no compulsory attendance Wink..air conditioned classes...lots of food outlets(mess inclusive)...ragging at itz minimum.....a strong educational backround...opportunities to do some thing different...to show case ur talent...annual fest like... Waves-Quark-Zephyr..and not 2 forget a place like Goa to spend the BEST 4/5 years of ur life!!!....all of this nthing but stands out in ur personality and at de end u come out saying "Proud to be a BITSIAN!"

abhimanyu:-First before you finish reading this post goto www.bits360.com and check out all the locations. This will give you an idea of what BITS Goa looks like. While looking at it imagine that you are feeling cold. Why? Because the whole campus is air-conditioned ( Except hostels obviously Smile ) Then as you visit the central lawn or library, feel free to take out your laptop and browse the net. Why? Because we have Wi-fi in the library, in classrooms and even on our lawns. As you enter the lecture theatures note that the two chalk boards are separated by a large white gap. Why? Because where else will the projector image be shown. Yes our Lecture theaters are all equipped with LCD projectors and all teachers use it daily in their classes. Then head off to the hostels and plugin your computer to the high speed LAN port. Feel free to browse the net, view the lecture slides ( Yes, the same ones that were used in class by your teacher) or download movies, songs, games, software from a 15 Terabyte ( Dont calculate, its 15000GB ) collection of shared data on our network.

I think this should give you a fair idea of the level of sophistication and use of advanced technology on campus.

ankur2tech:-Infra is excellent, u l love it..

b)PILANI

arvind:-nothing differnt frm goa...xcept that single rooms frm second year....and hostels r very old....though some rennovation is going on....one of the finest libraries....lecture theatres...student activity center....cnot place....all night canteen....food king(man i love the food there) and better messes(students control it).....and ultimate gaming freaks on the campus.....the education standards r good....and well established clubs departments and festivals(both cul and tech)....the only problem is the climatic condotions over here -3c in winter to 51c in summer.....though we got used to such climate.....solar heaters for boys in winters....and a cutoff from the cities(delhi the nearest city is arnd 250km frm da campus).....probably goa in 5-10 years wuld b ahead of pilani in all fields....

2)ACADEMICS,FACULTY
a)GOA:-
____________________________________________________________________________

rohan:i have heard that faculty in goa is not good is it correct

the_shadow:Well no.
Faculty has been recruited from Pilani. All our senior professors have taught in Pilani and IITs.They are not "new".Also faculty will take turns in teaching in all BITS Campuses(incl. Dubai but I cant say 4 sure if the profs wud like that).
There are many professors who are Maharashtrians and have come from Pilani, cuz Goa is kind of like Maharashtra.

ankur2tech:Guys dont confuse over Goa/Pilani issues//...
BPGC is nthng else but another campus of BITS-Pilani.. and situated at different geographical Zone.. right????
Faculty r same and they r tr. between campuses.. n there is nt any doubt on their efficiency of prof..
So u need nt to worry abt such things...

cartman:u heard right...

abhimanyu:The quality of teachers at both campuses is at par.

aravind:faculty....one thing i can guarantee u after joining in any engineering college...dont worry abt the faculty till u do ur CDC's(compulsory disciplinary courses)....

alap tripathy:- i had mentioned this fact in one of my columns. It is not that there is any difference in faculty per se - there in Pilani and here in Goa new faculty are selected through the same process and often by the same "bosses"
But Pilani is a well established institution which has lots of productive research work and professors involved in research here. Not as if nothing goes on here - there are good number of professors who are involved in cutting edge projects (N N Ghosh for example and Sunil Bhand Sir - Chemistry) Now it is just that things here are starting up and you may not get what you want (say something related to Computers/IT/Electronics) easily as all the best Professors would have been booked already. I happen to be a victim of that -well not exactly a victim - let me explain why. In Goa the variety has not yet appeared and something which is "hot topic" to you wud also be true for your batchmates. It is just a matter of being the first guy to get the idea and kickstart your project. Again the faculty you figure out may not know the A,B,C of what you intend to do (Pilani guys correct me if I am wrong) so you have to each yourself and him. Often times you might get/select a faculty member who is a "don" - master of a topic. Then you have to struggle to rise to his level. See it is all a marriage of convenience with a common goal - development of the scientific temper - it's not even the development of a new product (you can do so actually !! )
Often times I see that you do not require a Prof as a guide. You could collaborate within friends on campus, in Pilani Campus (what I did !!), in other good colleges (like the IITs, NIT .... ), or with technical persons (i.e. industry or Research Establishment guys like BARC, IISc ..... - thats what I did) That Im sure is going to pay richer dividends than hooking on to a Professor whose interest does not match yours. My first project was under assistance from a BARC Scientist - although I really didnt need him but I enjoyed it a lot and he did it too ! What I implemented is now the backbone of the campus network infrastructure. Had I been more diligent , I could have done more but that is another story.

Look at bits360. Did Abhinav and Abhimanyu need a guide. NO. They had a will to succeed, fought all odds and now they are one of the biggest success stories in campus. Did the faculty come in the way ? No. Did they help them ? No. They did not even know. They surely clapped when it was launched !! So, if you wanna learn, nothing should stop you !! Ask them how they succeeded. When I started CSD - was it as easy as just click a few buttons - know !! It is a lot of work, guys
The moral of the story according to me is that it is only you who can place restriction on your achievements. It is actually true as far as higher education is concerned - as far as I have seen

b)PILANI:-
aravind:faculty....one thing i can guarantee u after joining in any engineering college...dont worry abt the faculty till u do ur CDC's(compulsory disciplinary courses)....

someonenotonthisforumandwhograduatedthisyearfrompilani:- pilani has much better faculty they hav world class faculty million times better than goa

Placements:-
No need for us to worry about them in any bits???

Labs and library:

shantnu_18:I have heard abt the 'O' lab in pilani and also that pilani has one of the finest libraries.... I wanna ask whether in goa campus same kind of 'O' lab and Library available.......

atripathy:I have never understood why there is this so much hype about Oyester Lab in Pilani. Shantanu what exactly have you heard about it that makes u feel that so.
Oyester Lab is among the best labs of its kind for VLSI design. Alum have pumped significant amount of money into getting licensed design tools necessary for VLSI. Now the point is that you as a first year or even second year will not be able to get anything out of it except if you already have done VLSI design. Now even after doing my VLSI design course at Goa Campus, I would be scared to venture into the lab. They have a prerequisite that you should have done ADVD (The design course) and then you should have a concrete project in mind. It is not as if you can just bump in with an open slate there.
Now as for your question - we can access the lab at Pilani if we want to. As of now no one here as ventured thus far. Although on behalf of EEE Association here, we had enquired about its prospects. Having the lab here would not have made any difference. In fact, I say if Pilani has Oyester Goa Campus can have something else. A good start has been made with the Cypress PSoC Lab. Do you know that BITS Pilani Goa Campus is the first in India to be a part of the Cypress University Alliance Program ? This statement might just be good as a poster but the real ahievement according to me would occur when we students and faculty contribute in the manner as is expected out of us. So join at Goa and access this facility. To the best of my knowledge Pilani Campus doesn't have this yet. And it is only in some of the IIT's that few talented MTech Students work on actual applications on System on Chip.

cartman:chill chill chill....shantnu..go whrever u wanna go!...for masti come to goa..!!

the shadow:Alaap's absolutely correct. You probably wont be even allowed near that O-Lab.
As for lib , we have DC , from which we can get 100s of e-books on just about any topic(Incl the ones on topics which you'd not find in the library!!!Wink Wink Wink Cool )
In fact I haven't borrowed from or even read a single book in our great library till date.Just used to go there for wireless internet with my lappy.
This is taken from bits360.com
This should clear your doubt.
