never go by rankings!!!! theres politics involved in that too! all these private institutions pay up these ranking agencies to present a good rank in front of the nation thru the magazines and create hype and interest in their institutes! why do u think all private institutes havea very high application fees and for those who get thru, a very high fee for studies....heres where they spend money...ADVERTISEMENT! as is a well known fact, govt engg colleges have a very low fee for education and appication procedure...so most students who qualify go there....thus the creamy layer(read:good applicants) favor them...the rest go to private colleges. All companies who are interested in campus placements, thus, only go to (or prefer) govt engg colleges....because they cant compromise on quality...then they go to private engg collges but their decision is entirely based upon the candidates performance in any engg college they go to and they never decide on which colleges to go to.

a friend of mine who got 890 rank in vit secured exactly 92 marks and another who got 89 marks got 2564 rank
the tie breaker is 1) maths score
2)physics
3)age( only year)
4) initial of the candidate
even a small error while marking omr is strictly rejected
these were the facts told by a chief officer of vit
my friends parents had already paid 25 laks to vit thinking their son couldnot get any seat but later as he got 890 rank they went to vit college and took bak the money
as per key i got 93 but as per due to error in omr my marks now are 86 4277 rank
my imitial is "s"
even my close friend parsineti charandeep who got 8 th rank in vit2008 iit 285+ aieee 230+ is an upper middle class candidate he didnt pay any money to get that seat
i dont reject that there has been a scam in vit but leave about it and concentrate on bitsat

Well BITS is a Private Insti and its pretty good.
It is quite true that a lot money is spent by private instis on publicity.
There is a reason why the media hypes certain premier instis(like IITs and IIMs) , in order to create the "Media Ratrace".
BITS keeps out of this and thats why its not that famous.

bits is not private! it is a deemed university/institute. and mind u, it took them sometime to build on infrastructure and the facilities that they now i have so that it could be promoted to the level of a deemed university/institute! so initially, even they must have required some amount of money and even publicity to get good students

BITS started in 1929 as Birla Engineering College(BEC) , under the University of Rajasthan , and was one of the TOP colleges in India before Independence. In 1964 it was made BITS-Pilani , a deemed university and was still among the best. And mind you , back then , there was no concept of media and publicity the way we have today.
BITS is completely private and Govt. unaided.
