COLOUR OF COMPLEXS See here actually on the approach of a ligand the initially degenerate d orbitals now split ut into two energy levels Eg and T2g levels which are of two forms octahedral and tetrahedral splitting Eg consists d(x^2-y^2) and d(z^2) T2g consits d(xy),d(yz),d(xz) so when an electron at a lower energy level absorbs light from outside and jumps from one lower energy level toa higher one you are able to see the light that is reflected ie if Cu complex is blue in colour that means the electrons have absorbed red colour to jump up!!! now your doubts clarified!!!?????

v do not consider the electrons donated by d ligand, consider only the e- that the metal has already after ionisationi.e the ion has, pair them up if the ligand is strong or else leave them just like that. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

for hybridisation: 1)first find the charge on the metal and write its e- config. 2)then pair e- if it is a strong ligand. 3)then take the orbitals of the metal ion which are empty. for eg:[Co(NH3)6]3+ Co3+=[Ar]4s0 3d6 || | | | |------>these r electrons representation since NH3 is strong pair it. || || || d d s p p p it implies der r two d ,one s and three p orbitals which r empty. so u have d2sp3 hybridisation. hope this helps do ask if not clear !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
