Hey, Aayush. Please don't mind but frankly speaking, I didn't understand the reason you gave for your statement "(as still the net force will be inwards)...''. I said that the net grav. force is is repulsive because gravity is nothing but the net grav. force exerted by the earth .OK, Lets see the whole situation from a different and simpler point of view. Gravity is acting upward, which means that any object kept on the earth surface will be thrown in the upward i.e. outward direction. Now, the molecules just at the surface of the earth may be considered as particulate objects resting on the earth. So, these particles will get thrown away in the outward direction. After this comes the turn of the next layer of molecules. It too will be eliminated in a similar manner. This process will continue and it can be stopped only if the earth regains its original attractive nature of gravity. But there is no indication in the question that this will happen. So, the whole earth will disintegrate completely. Atleast that is what I think.

Hi All the discussion so far has been more or less concentrated on Newtonian Concepts. We musn't forget the Einstein's description of gravity. As gravity is nothing but the distortion of space around a massive body, so opposite gravity will do nothing but distort the space in geometrically opposite fashion. Hence, the bodies that came in contact with a massive body which use to change their course or appear to change their course, will then be heading away in a similar fashion. As it feels today that bodies have a likiness to earth, It will appear thay hate earth and on coming in way of earth will turn away. There should be no effect whatsoever on earth, as it is mass object and gravity is a outer phenomenon produced by the virtue of its mass.

in gravitation a force of attaraction acts b/w two bodies having gome mass. earth can be considered as made up of n particles of mass m. these n masses remain together due to the force of attaraction acting b/w them acc to newton's formula F=Gmm/rr. and then acc to superposition principle, the vector sum of all the forces is to be considered.so earth is round. but if the force of gravitation becomes opposing, each partice will move away from every other particle and thus earth shall turn into a mess of discrete particleslying at positions where force by one is calcelled by the other ie null point.

hi rjunghare as u have said that earth will move away '"IS NOT CORRECT'" because the force acting between the sun & earth is gravitational force of attraction which is balanced . we are disturbing only 'g' which is developed by earth. thing will happen is that " mass of earth is reduced & as a result shape of earth is affected" i think this is correct

look ppl there are enugh problems troubling mankind already , why create more by thinking of this extremely hypothetical situation which u and i know can never exist....chillax ppl let's think of something real.... u know they don't say it for nothing that TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTION !!

if gravity became a repelling force instead of an attracting force nothing would exist. everything would be thrown away there would be nothing but points existing at great distances

it may seems that earth may take elleptical shape but it will be a sphere only thoough it will be out of its original axis
