u saying alcohols more acidic than water in general, man u are creating a big mistake, correct it

ya and as far as alcohols vs. water is concerned for acidity...........
quoting my teacher.....pretty reliable source.......
" IT DEPENDS ON THE STABILISATION OF THE ALKOXIDE ION BY THE WATER MOLECULE........."
methanol is actually a bit flatter to decieve.......the degree of solvation of the methoxide ion is more than the the ethoxide ion or for further alkoxide ions.......
that's the reason its more acidic.....

kundan is right that methanol is more acidic( slightly) than water but all other alchohols are less acidic reason--- O is an elct -ve element thus to release h+ it must gain as much e- density from any other grp that it is to be satisfied and release h+. this work is done by CH3 (+I effect) grp which is not possible in water. so it is a bit acidic but in ethanol the +i effect increases to such an extent that the alkoxide ion(rather O) gets more charge density and acts as a very strong base (tendency to accept H+ increases). the it doesnot dissociate to release H+ the reasons by kundan may also be right.... i cant say but the fact that methanol is more acidic( slightly) than water but all other alchohols are less acidic is true..............

Arre yaar ladna band karo.
I gave U the Pka values to tell U that the acidity diff is very less. And we cant defy experimental observations. There is no other method to solve this ques. In case of higher alcohols, The +I effect of R group and that unstability of conjugated base comes into play and is more effective than polar bond explanation.

the conjugate base of HOH is OH- which is the strongest base present hence more basic than CH3O-.therefore,CH3OH is more acidic than HOH as conjugate base which is strong has a weak conjugate acid.
