1.Funding and labs:The IITs get thousands of crores of funding from the government.After the NIT act(the new one ; 2006-7) even the NITS will start getting similar amounts .The private institutes have to raise funds on their own.(with some help from the alumni).So the IITs have world class labs and workshops.A first of its kind research park is opening in IITM where top companies have already booked some labs for research which will be carried out by the faculty and students.There is a centre of innovation in IITM where students work on everything from planes to robots Can any private institute boast of such facilities for research?
2.Faculty:Most of the proffs are Phds from the Top tech colleges in the US(Most of whom are IIT grads ).My chemistry proffesor @ IITM had worked with P.W.Atkins.(YEah the guy who wrote the world famous Physical Chemistry book ). Some proffesors are on the verge of getting the nobel prize.They have hundreds of patents in their name.The faculty student ratio was 1:9 a few years ago and now is at 1:10.Their will hardly be any private institutes who can match this.(There are some exceptions though.BITS Pilani campus has a good ateacher:student ratio) .
3.Hostels : In IIT Only some first year students have to live in double rooms.Apart from them every body gets a single room from the second year on ward.The hostels have private maintainence and are cleaned regularly.In colleges like VIT Vellore you have to share your room with 3-4 people.Some of the hostels(IIT) may be old but they have been refurnished and the rooms look brand new.New hostels are also being constructed.(These are awesome with transparent lifts).The NITs have been gulity of allotting 3-4 people the same room.However, even they have started building new hostels after the increased funding.
4.Sports facilities:The sports facilities are world class at IIT.The Indian cricket team trains at the Chemplast Cricket Ground @ IIT Madras whenever they come to this part of the country.There is an olympic size swimming pool.There is a gym equipped with all the things you could think off.There is a quadrangle (playing area of the size of a small football field) in each hostel.There are cricket nets in some hostels.There are hockey and football fields where the institute team trains.There is a TT Table in each hostel.There are many badminton and tennis courts as well.What more could you ask for?????
5.Student quality:As you yourself have agreed for years people have been opting for govt colleges. over private colleges.So no point in elaborating.Dont worry about OBC quota.2000 OBC candidates have qualified in the general list(JEE rankers) There are 2000 OBC seats and with the new rule all vacant OBC seats will be filled by general candidates.So the student quality hasnt been affected.
In some private institutes there are donation seats. You can buy a seat in Vellore for 10-15 lakhs.Whats the bloody point of going to such an institute?
6.Fees:The Nits charge the lowest fees in India.(except JADAVpur).The IITs charge only 40k for an education worth lakhs.
Most of the private colleges will cost you an arm and a leg.The charge like crazy(The have to , to raise funds) for mediocre education.
However, there are some exceptions.
The best 5 private institutes are BITS,BIT Ranchi,PSG,IIITH and Thapar.(All of them have a clean process of admission and have real placements.)
Most of the others are just out to make money.

well in up we call the rooms f sm govt coll like "dharamshalas"
