Salt Analysis
========== hey frnz this mite b quite useful to ya...sinc pract r goin on......i havnt givn test fr al ...only a fw of them If de salt given 2 ya is a white colord 1
here's hw u proceed 1. white colour of de salt indicates de absence of Cu2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, Mn2+ 2.smell -- ammoniacal smell (NH4+ may b present )
vinegar smell (CH3COO- may b present ) 3.Test 4 acid radical (anion) { only fr CO3- , X- , NO3- SO4- , PO3-} -----------------------------------------------------------------------
a) add dil H2SO4
effervesence wid evolution of CO2 gas wic turns lime watr milky
thn CO3 2- is confirmd
if nt thn its absent
b) add conc H2SO4
effervesence wid evolution of
i) colourless gas givin white dense fumes wid a rod
dipped in NH4OH --- indicates Cl- may b present ii) brownish gas --- indicates Br- may b present iii) voilet gas --- indicates I- may b present
iv) reddish brown gas wid bcums dense on additn of Cu turnings ---- indicates NO3 - may b present c) if stil u dont get ane of thez ( no rxn) thn it has 2 b SO3 2- r PO4 3-
2 distinguisb btw SO3 2- r PO4 3-
do thez tests
add BaCl2 2 de soln -- white ppt obtaind
on addin lead acetate -- white ppt formd
thn its confirmd its SO3 2-
n if u do get ane of the abov tests (a) n (b) positive thn perform ane 2 conformatory tests fr de respesctive anion ( i m nt givin thoz ....)
3.Test 4 basic radical (cation) { Pb 2+, NH4+ , Al3+ }
-------------------------------------------------------------
a) add NaOH soln n heat
smell of NH3 givin white dense fumes wid a rod dipd in conc HCl ----indicates NH4+ may b present b) add dil HCl
white ppt obtaind
Pb2+ may b present c) pass H2S gas
no rxn -- absence of Cu2+ d) heat strongly n xpel de H2S gas
aftr coolin add NH4Cl (s) n NH4OH
white gelatinous ppt -- indicates Al3+ may b present on gettin ane positive test preform ane 2 conformatory tests n u'll get cation 2

look i feel it is better to know the colour, touch of all the salts in ur syllabus so if u know this u know like is the salt crystalline or is it amorphous ????? n what d colour if white then o know not much to do , then is it a fine powder ...... etc

TARIN.............yaar ...........sorry........... late se dekha iss post ko........coz busy with prac prep.(1st se hai)... ur case is just same as mine in class XI th 's prac...... mine salt turned out to be ZnS.. it was white powderish type...... which turned into a sticky toothpaste kind of substance with water........ no tests... nothing.......... wasn't even dissolving ............. then later...my lab incharge told me that in that case i ought to make a sodium carbonate extract then do the tests......... waise don't take tension......... avg. marking milna chachahiye(>25)........... and pataa nahiin mera kya hoga........... :(-----------------):

sum1 said dat nitrates a killer......
i cantreally disagree.....
specially if u get any nitrates of radicals lik barium nd copper...
dats because they dont respond to the brown ring test......
they form insoluble sulphates instead.....
it wud b much better to go for the diphenylalanine test....
a nitrate usually turns blue on adding adequate quantities of diphenylalanine......

to test for acetate radical,it wudbe much better to go for the ferric chloride test....
on adding a small amount of FeCl3 to the aq. soln. of the salt,u shud get a blood red colouration of ferric acetate.

chromyl chloride is always the best method of testing for chloride.....
but in sum cases,the lead acetate test can be applied......
on adding lead sulphate,a white ppt of lead chloride is obtained....
and i cant bet on it,but i thinki heard sumwhere dat the chromyl chloride gas can cause cancer......

i am quite lucky in having a supportive school.....
the teachers and lab assts. did their best to provide us wid a lil bit of , hehehe ,external support....
i mean, if nybody unfortunately got stuck up wid their circuits,or if ny1 had any prblms gettin their readings........
