Thank You! all 4 ur views on this. I know of the pKa value but i think we need a conceptual and theoritical answer 4 it. i had a look at the march edition of arihant's chemistry spectrum but couldn't understand it.

are bhai tarin if u can apply this polarity concept to methanol then why cant u apply this polarity concept to ethanol. In case we apply to ethanol we get ethanol more acidic than water which is false.

Arre bhai snippy,
See, I gav the Pka values to show that the diff in acidity of water and methanol is very very less.
R group has +I effect, which tends to decrease acidity. This +I effect is there in both methanol as well as higher alcohols.
Now U cant defy experimental observations and U also need a theoritical and conceptual ans to those observations. So the only way to explain the more acidity of methanol is the polarity of the bond.
In higher alcohols, the R group is larger, hence more +I effect and this +I effect overshadows the polarity effect and hence they are less acidic than water.

OK .............YES WE CAN APPLY POLARITY IN BOTH CASES........
aur precisely wahi hum log keh rahe hain.........ki the solvation of methoxide ion is more than ethoxide ion isilye uska acidity jyada hai.............but that's an exception to general alcohols like so many other exceptions in chem...............
AAP INQUISITIVE HO BCOZ UR INTERESTED AND WE APPRECIATE IT.............isliye dont take anything in the wrong sense........

kundan leo good attempt...........and its good to hear that we all are good friends...........in my opinion this question cant have any reason...........i mean it can have many like polarity one and solvation one..........but again when this "experimental observation" thing comes na then I get restless.........and most of the time I dont get my reason wich i want ............... so koi baat nahi......lets end this now.........cheers
