IITs : I have heard that managing a Branch Change is relatively more difficult in IIT Madras, Roorkee & Gauhati. Is that correct ? Can someone validate this please ?
Also, let?s hear about IIT-B, IIT-D,IIT-K,IIT-Kgp,BHU, ISM. May I urge the Experts/Alumni from these Institutes or a member having credible info thru? a close relative or a friend studying at the said Institutes step forward & enlighten us ?
I read somewhere that more than 1% students at IIT-K get 10 CGPA. That came as a surprise. I thought that only the absolute topper ( just one person ) at the institute wd get 10. Can someone clarify ?
BITS PILANI : I have heard that a CGPA of 7.8 at Goa ensured someone?s passage into Mechanical stream last year. And that about 30% students at Goa get 7.8 CGPA.
What is the corresponding figure at the Pilani campus ?

Chandan, On going thru yr reponse in the following URL http://www.goiit.com/posts/list/about-iits-experts-pls-help-at-jee-air-2621-16995.htm
I found something that I had glossed over earlier in my first reading. It is reproduced below ( underlined) :
About the level of difficulty in branch change at different IIT's I can tell you about 4 IITs only i.e, IITK, IITD, IITB, IITKGP. I think Dep.C is most difficult at IITK then IITB then IITD. As I have written above it is relatively easy at IITKGP.
This is out of sync with another piece of info that I had. Let me explain.I have read ( perhaps a write up by one IIT-K Prof named Dheeraj ) that IITK is rather flexible.....they let u change till the end of the 4th Semester. Also, they let the branch strength plummet to 60% level which is rather generous. The way he sounded it seemed as if exercising a Branch Change option at IITK was the easiest among all the IITs. Your opinion appears to be diametrically opposite. U v pointed out that changing a Branch at IITK is perhaps the most difficult among the 4 IITs mentioned above. I am a bit confused. There is no confusion about IIT Kgp. Even Bipin ( one of the experts in this forum ) had stated that Branch Change at Kgp was not that difficult. It is the reality about Kanpur that's not so clear.

Well.... I compared the level of difficulty in DepC in different IITs on the basis of level of competition you are going to face for it , i.e, what level of dedication and hard work is expected of you for a branch change at different IITs.Believe me it's most difficult at IITK.
But then there is the case of a ideal boy (I hope you understand what I mean by a ideal boy). If you are a ideal boy, believes in 'nothing is impossible' ,you can do whatever you want in your life. So what is the big deal about branch change. You can manage it anywhere. After all someone like you is gonna make it to CS(or whatever branch), so why not you rather than him? cheers. :)
And as Swaty has already mentioned branch change is allowed up to 4th Sem but only on the basis of CGPA up to 2nd Sem. Let me gather more info/stat about DepC at IITK. The intake at IITKGP is highest and is more than it's capacity. So it can't show such generosity as shown by IITK.
And yeah it's true that many students at IITK & IITB get CGPA 10.
Rate it if you find it useful.

Hi, Why isnt anybody from any other IIT (other than Kgp) forthcoming ?
This too has to be factored in ( may be marginal factor but not insignificant ) while choosing among different IITs & between IIT-BITS Pilani.
Wdnt such data be avlbl in some Archive, or something of that kind, at the IITs ? Perhaps, those presently studying at the IITs wd have access to this info.
Same request to the BITS alumni...
A quick response pl......

Here is a little bit of info that I have been able to garner from various sources. These are very credible sources ( Student/Prof of IIT) & the info are authentic.I know some of us wd factor this in while preparing a choice.
IIT-Roorkee: Someone managed a Branch Change to Chemical at a CGPA of 9.1 last year.
IIT-Kanpur: At the end of 1st year, CSE,EE or ME usually do not have any vacancies. Typically, Chemical & Aerospace would have 2-3 vacancies and there would be 3 or more vacancies in the other disciplines. Roughly a CGPA of 8 is required to change to a MSc program. You would normally need a CGPA around 9.0 to get Chemical or Aero. And if at all there is a vacancy in EE/ME, that would require a minimum CGPA of 9.8.
As a thumb rule, a CGPA of 8 means you are in the top 30% of the class ( This is no walk in the park. Looks easy on the paper but will take a lot of doing ) . Top 1.5% get a CGPA of 10 there. And the 10 pointers can get whatever they aspire to.
If anybody else has some info based on his/her networking, pl share with us. Come on friends. Need more info on IIT-R , IIT-G etc.
