Dear Sir, First let me tell you all abt my self.
I am Asutosh from Orissa and this year (2007) passed 12 th board examination. I had taken PCB as main subjects and Maths as optional. Actually I dont like Maths much but any way I passed in maths. My average % of marks in all subjects 76% In PCB 84%.
I have very much interest in Biology (especially Molecular biology and Genetics). You dont believe me I subscribe Research journal of HHMI( Howards Huges Medical Institute a biomedical research Inst. of USA). And I am very highly motivated by that.
My parents want me to be a doctor. I had appeared AIPMT and State medical Entrance exam in 2007 but I was only selected in the waiting list just in a difference of 4-5%. I also want to be a doctor but dont like clinical practice but CLINICAL RESEARCH. So I was considering M.Tech / MD / PG in Biotech or so after MBBS.
Any way next year(2008) I am going to appear Medical entrance exam and also consiedring IIT JEE from BIO-ENGINEERING point of view as I am keen to that subject. I think why to do 6 years MBBS If Research is my future desity any way. I am just hearing Biotech has less scope in India and you have to go to abroad for job but I dont care as I am highly interested in BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH.
I would like to take some suggestion from you.
1. Is it a good choice to go for IIT instead of Medical for me? 2. What is the cutoff rank for IIT-Biotech/Bio-engineering in different IITs ? 3. How much effort I have to put in Maths (as I am not strong) to qualify JEE? 4. Which IIT is good from Bio-engineering/Biotech point of view ? 5. Are Infracture are good enough for research projects ? 6. What about faculty members as IITs what I know are technical instiutes but Biotech is related to Life science. 7. What are the scopes of Ex-IITans in Biotech Industry in India or abroad ?
I am eagerly waiting for ur reply.

First of all I can say that if u want to get in to IIT u want to get through JEE.For that u must be strong in maths bcz there is a minimum cut off for each subject and it requires a strong conceptual n problamatic skills in P.C.M . Comming to the infrastructure n Faculty that is IIT my dear n there is no nead to worry abt them . as far as my knowledge IIT-K is good for research

I am good at Phy and Chem. In Phy i am doing H.C.Verma and D.C.Panday I have P.bahadur and R.C.Mukarjee for Numerical, Arihant Organic chemistry and Op tondon for inorganic.
I am doing TMH IIT MATHs and Arihant series also
I am also taking online coaching from Manish Verma (IIT Madras) through www.123iitjee.com
Is it not possible to be strong in a year, that much to get a rank and qualify for Bio-tech in IITs.

hey well let me talk frankly .. see cracking JEE is tough .. u need good maths .. that will b required .. so if u r bad at maths .. think about it again .. U may need about 1500 rank to get Biotech ,, And see the field is not yet developed in INdia .. not gr8 scope here .. it is outside only that there is scope ,.. cheers

Since you have interest in Bio,you definitely should pursue it.As far as IIT's are concerned, for a subject like biotech which is so new,the best place to study is the IIT's.IIT-KGP's biotech dept is considered to be the best in the country with it's cirriculum being followed by the NIT's who are going to open biotech courses.Regarding the prospects of the subject, right now as it stands it is the most challenging field as well as very open but in India, things haven't developed as yet but in 10-15 years time,India will definitely advance a lot in the field. The fact that the subject has so much importance nowadays can be gauged from the fact that the NIT's are also going to open UG courses in this field. As far as ranks are concerned,in IIT KGP you need ranks around 2500 to get B Tech and 2700 for dual degree. In roorkee and guwahati you need ranks of about 2900-3000.One thing about this field is that higher studies is a must to prosper unlike other subjects where B Tech degree is enough.Since you are interested in research,I don't think that's a problem.I can't say much about other IIT's but in KGP,they have spent an enormous amount on instruments amounting to crores.Initiatives have been taken and authorities are going to spend more money in this field considering it's potential for research.
