If the 1st button of a shirt is wrongly put,all the rest are surely crooked.So always be careful on your 1st step.Rest will come correct...

how far behind is chemical as compared to mechanical in terms of job prospects later?? is chemical closer to civil or mechanical overall (placements, job type, etc)?

Always be just and unbiased in your opinions and also say them aloud, even if it means the majority of the world to go against you!!
There will be still some left, who will approve of your character and one of them is God!!!

in terms of job prospects,see mech is an evergreen and basic engineering stream..so the mechanical guys have demand everywhere and consequently their pay package is also good..chemical engineering is a restricted engineering stream..its not as vast as mechanical engineering...so the pay package and placements are a bit lesser...chemical is closer to civil in terms of slaries and job prospects but ultimately it depends on u..if u do well in civil also,then u can always get a higher salary than a mechanical engineer who has done averagely...hope u ogt it...cheers!!

Chemical Also, there are certain subjects in civil which are, if not very, but substantially hard to crack....especially if u r bad at drawing (like me :D ).......some parts of Civil Engineering will give u trouble

cs>=ee>mech>chem>civil>metallurgy (dont know abt aerospace)
in any case it depends upon your performance at your institute. a student who is doing excellently in chem/mech can get better pays than one who is doing poorly in ee or cs.

Kanwar, If salary is your sole concern, maybe u shd hv joined Petroleum BTech at ISM Dhanbad. Someone there bagged a job of 47 lakhs per annum last yr ....in fact 6 students of Petroleum made it to the French giant Schlumberger ( all 6 of them are millionnaires every year ). I m sure this is not the key consideration that u shd hv. IITs prepare u for your last job & not for your entry level job. So, join IIT-B without so much as a second thought. Forget abt salary. And finally, IIT-B is the best of them all....more so for Chemical.i

Guys....
chemical is better than mechanical, electrical and mechanical is u consider the Avg salary to be the criteria....
U can say that mechanical is versatile and required in every industry....but infact thats the downside....mechies r required for maintainence in chemical plants and hence they r not the main engineers n that company.....so they can never go on to become the directors of that company!!!!!!
and the main recruiters on mechanical engineers are auto companies while those for chem guys r petrochemical companies and they pay much higher salaries....
of course mechanical has very large areas for further studies...so does chemical...
and infact in USA chemical is historiacally the highest paid straem of engineering...even abuv CSE and electronics
