I want to go to IIT but im not sure if thats the place for me. I've never been to school in India so im not used to the 'competitiveness.' Everytime i visit, i feel that the intesity of the students' studies is very much higher than here. I've also heard about NRIs that go to and Indian college and fail because its just too much for them. (my mom went to stanley medical college and she always says stories about how the americans werent really that smart.) Im wondering if this is true. Also, do foreign nationals need to right the JEE? eik!

Well, I think the Indian students (including me) ........ are not that serious about the regular studies ...........
But when it come about IITs .......... they have to become more competitive .........
And, according to me, the foreign students tend to fail bcoz of the communication gap between them and students and also ...... they have to adjust themselves to the conditions here ......
Best of luck ..... if you are giving the JEE .......

i can speak tamil (with a lot of effort.) if i were to get in to, say, IIT dehli then id be completely lost. is the JEE syllabus the same as what is studied in 12? like, im going through this "Physics for IIT-JEE" book and theres a general outline of whats in the book. (e.g. under magnetics theres...coulumb's law, ohm's law etc etc.) but when i get to the questions, they're all way over my head. i cant even attempt them. am i the only one so lost here? keep in mind though, i haven't prepared for hte exam at all.

Non chana, you're not the only one lost. But, practice tames everything. But, I did get some of the probs in first attempt. I think CBSE curriculum is great for that matter.

see for getting into iit even if you are nri or foreign national you will have to write jee and clear it with a good rank and you will have to compete with a generl indian candidate as there is no special reservation for foreign ational. Now th situation in india is that each and every candidate who gets selected in jee undergoes an intense coaching curse from a coaching center for 2 long year besides his normal school studies. Even the topper of jee who is considered to be a genius also takes coaching or tution for 2 long yearrs fromm kota. So if you think that you can clear jee with a good rank then think again. But the nit's (national institute of technology ) in india teakes foreign students or nri through dasa schme and you can enetr these colleges directly without passing any test on the basis of your 12 class score. Nits comes second to iits. and as far as i rememberuptill now only one foreign national from dubai i suppose has been able to clear jee and that too with not so good rank..
But still dont loose hope you can try..

so just work hard and u'll clear it for sure

the language tat isn't a big problem
truly speaking
i'm tamilian
and i too dont know hindi
so i also will be in trouble if i get to iit delhi

1. Dont worry for language... coz its all on the enviornment.........
Even if you go to IIT Delhi.. not only you, many other face the same problem (like ganesha also)
But as you adjust yourself in the enviornment.. gradually you'll become good in hindi as other folks.
2. Regarding proper way to study for IIT surely there are regular two or one year coachings, and they do give proper techniques, but what is important is how you'd take it and apply it to crack questions. It is something that matters the most.
And many students who study on their own also devlop the way... through proper practice, thats why intensity of study gets high here. You can also try on your own, but for that you'll need to get hands on proper books.
3. JEE syllabus covers class 11th and 12th topics as per NCERT here, and few extended topics, I am not sure is that same at Canada.
4. Try your hands on good books for JEE, coz some books are there, like H.C Verma's Concepts in Physics that helps to clear concepts a lot. Also I'll advice you to don't directly jump on to harder questions of JEE, first start from basic questions per topic and then gradually move on to harder questions, when you feel confident. If there's something to struck, go through theory once again.. and we are here for solving your doubts too!!

thanks for the advice,
i did go write the JEE and even though i had prepared a bit and thought i would be somewhat okay, the exam extremely tough. im not so sure of my chances but we'll see...

its all for the experience. indians work hard but have so much fun too. here's its just slogging. anyway, the US isn't the place to be anymore with its failing economy.
though CBSE syllabus tests only what you have memorized, the syllabus that you learn is a lot more than here. thats for sure.
hemant, where are you planning to go? i heard you wrote the SAT's.
