In IIT, to get a rank, you need to clear the cutoff in each subject (marks in that subject in paper1+ marks in that subject in paper 2). So, if u get 5 in chem in paper 1 and 55 in chem in paper 2, and cutoff for chem is 58, then your total is 60 and thus, you clear the cutoff. Same with all the subjects.
In AIEEE, state ranks are needed for admission to state colleges. National rank is for admission to non-regional colleges like IIITs , NITs,etc... To be honest, I dont really know much abt AIEEE . So, i am not 100% sure. But generally its your National rank only which is primarily important.

well for IIT the above guy has given the correct ans...
well that state rank and national rank thing is
national rank helps u to get admsn in various govt colleges and NIT's...while some colleges have state quota...
eg. if u r in punjab...u come under 85% quota (for punjab students)...they will see ur punjab state rank to give u the amdsn...

this is what a friend of mine has told me. he read the rules on the AIEEE site last year.. we both found it damn funny..
actually the whole state rank national rank is more sonfusing than that.. the state rank is MOST inportant. basically you have a 1% chance of getting any other state NIT.. 99% you will only get your own state NIT. this is because of the following system
every state has a reserved number of seats in the NIT of another state.. example: NIT in maharashtra state has 2 seats reserved in NIT trichy. this means that of ALL maharshtra students , ONLY 2 will be allowed to get admission in trichy... and this is based on your state rank again. the number of reserved seats is proportional to number of students giving the exam.
the state rank controls everything. the national rank is just a rank which tells you how many people are ahead of you, and nothing more.
the sad part of this is that if your state has a poorly reputed NIT, then its your bad luck..

In IIT JEE, u need to clear both subjectwise cut-off ( as explained lucidly by Rooney earlier) & the aggregate cut-off. The aggregate cut-off is typically higher than the sum of the cut-offs in each subject ( P,C & M). Last year's overall cut-off was in the vicinity of 190 marks ( not lesser than 185 marks for sure). The individual cut=offs in P,C & M , to the best of my info from some people who got thru, was P 61, C 57 & M 60 ....or less ( these add upto 178 only)
Any comments?

Ahh and 1 more thing...do not even think of just clearing the total cutoff as you wont be interested in taking any of the courses being offered at that rank.
