IIT Roorkee - PLEASE HELP URGENT!

Hi I got a rank close to 1700. I have also got a good mark in BITS to secure to Electronics and mayb cse. I saw last year cutoffs. I think for my rank i mite get mechanical in roorkee. I am not hoping for anything more though I hear that the cutoffs will come down this time. :| I want to know something

1. How good is the mechanical course in roorkee - faculty, labs infrastructure.

2. is branch change possible if I get a high gpa?

3.What are the weaknesses of roorkee?

4. Is roorkee as much a brand as the other iits?

5. How strong is the bits brand?

hey .. conmgats first of all for dng well ...
now as far as ur question is concerned .. see there i am a bits pilani student nd will go 2 2nd yr now .. i have EEE with me ... as of my avice goes ... dnt leave a rank like 1700 in iit .. if u get roorkee mechanical then great otherwise there are other great options that are possible lke engineering physics , civil , nd some duals .. u will get to noe more abt them when u get ur brochure .. but srsly .. dnt leave a rank like this just thinking bt CS or EEE ... itz a terrible mistake pl do nd u miot regret ur decision .. had ur rank been 2700 i wud have said the other way .. but my advice remains wait for the info brochure to come nd decide ur branch .. but no need to leave 1700 .

nd ya ... bits brand is pretty strong for that mater .. nothing wrong with it .. just that i reckon 1700 is too good to leave

I know a guy with 3400 rank. What do you think is possible with that rank in iit.?

Since the seats have increased, won't he stand slightly better chance compared to last year?

Or is it better to look elsewhere ?

Thanks amangem! Okay!! Even I know IIT Brand is good... but i wanna do only 3 main - CSE, EEE, Mech because i wanna do an mtech in robotics.

I also heard that IIT Roorkee mech is not so great. :(

@1.7k .. do one thing .. go to orkut nd open the roorkee community of mechanical engineering ... there contact some senior nd get a better feedback bt the course .. i as such cn only tell u bt bits .. thats y i said mech roorkee agar milti hai toh mat chorna thinking itz roorkee nd stuff ... infact had me been in ur position i wud have even gone to guwahati had it been mech .. roorkee is a old clg with a certainly good infrastructure .. rest is upto u .. but ya think nd decide carefully over whatever u do .

@satya .. i rlly cnt comment on the availibility of seats .. i wud say do filll up the form nd the option sheet .. but ya dnt give up other options for that matter .. rest wait for wt the person gets

nd ya for robotics ... dnt worry .. there are courses other thn mech cs eee which cn help u in robotics .... engineering physics is a gud thing with regsard to that ... do consult some professorr or somebody if u r interestd in robotics later nd wanna noe wt branch u want now

Congrats on your great rank and score!!
Well , apply for BITS too.You can take your final decision in late July.Till then ask ppl (by that I mean students and profs teaching in the various instis you are applying)

As for BITS brand, its pretty strong too.

Why dont you look for IT BHU Comp Sc. I guess It can give you best career opportunity at this rank. I will rank ITBHU comp sc above IITR Mech.

I know a no. of guys who left Roorki electronics for ITBHU Mech etc, in 2000 when IITR didn't exist. Just explore the career opportunites for both by contacting some alumni.

you have several options at 1700, though most of them are off-beat.

(1) mech at iitrk

(2) engg des/automobiles at iitm

(3) production at iitd

(4) civil anywhere

(5) cs at iit-bhu

(6) mech dual (probably) at iitm and iitkgp

(7) aerospace at all iit's

(8) biotech anywhere

and some more..i can't remember them now.....

my preference would be : 6>2>4>5>1>3>7>8

ya not aero btech at all iit's.

but you can get aero duals at some iit's.
