-------------------------------------------------------- since i am new to this community plz ignore my earlier messages. TRY to answer the question posted below. I will try to update this page as i get more info from my bro and his friends at iit and other institutes ------------------------------------------------------------------
(confused about choosing cs program form top colleges other than iit)
i got 3229 rank in jee and 1169 in aieee( State rank 32)
Below are the few saying from my elder brother who graduted from iit- Bombay (computer science - Btech) last year( now at stanford). Just like me he made into iit in first attempt (unlucky me with bad rank)
1. he used to tell that if u are interested in any subject ( for example physics) than you should go for that branch irrespective of the college unless that college is equipped with handicapped professors and equipment. This phenomenon is clearly evident as JEE 5th ranker ( year 2005) went for MSC in PHYSICS at iit KANPUR( u can verify this). Suppose you are getting the same subject in many institute than irrespective of the institute rank u should go for dept. rank. ( people at IIt go for higher education by takking account of dept rating). But gnerrally it so happens that institue with good rating also have equally good dept.
2. Suppose you are not inclined to any subject and you have options like chemical at iit-B and computer science at iit gawahti , pilani or suratkal. You are definitely confused like everyone what u should do. If you are targetting MBA than definitely go for chemical at IIT-B. Now a days half of the people irrespective of their branches are joing softare industry. If u count urself as one of them than it is better to join decent institute with cs branch. AS working on high end jobs(most iitians and people form daiict, nits cs dept get like this) it is is extrememly difficult for the person fron non-cs background to compete.
3. i am meant for computer scinece but getting chemical at iit what to do ??? you can definitely go for cs at nits(only the good ones). one institute got the attention of my brother . It is daiict . almost every faculty holds phd from good US univ and are from iitians. many friends of brother are form this place and now are making money at the places like google, yahoo, SUN, IBM research LAB, Texas Instruemnet ( to name a few) or are studying at IIT BOMABAY, stanford iisc or pursuing MBA at IIM A,B,C,L,I ( they dont care about kozikode ;)
4. IF u r still interested in CS/ EE and still not getting anywhere. TAKE A DROP. Dont go to any third class institute it will spoil ur over all development along with ur studies
5.Never think that u r the best person at iit and will be able to change ur stream at the end of first year. IITs follow GPA system( it is a relative grading system). so one can assume that average gpa at cs dept will be better than at civil( since cs ppl got better rank in jee so therefore are more hardworking.. u will find most of the 10 pointers or 9+ are from cs or ee dept at the end of 1st year). although it is a dept. average but u still have a chance. But think of it only after u join iit.
Plz answer this question i got 3229 rank in iit . i have only one interest i.e mathematics . sir what are my chance of getting Mathematics and computing course( integreted MSC) in IITK and IIT kgp . can i get stats and informatics msc course at kgp. gawahati has also started BTECH in maths and computing ..what are my chances???? i know that it is impossible 4 me to get in MTECh at IIT Delhi
Also i have secured 1169 rank in AIEEE with state rank of 32 ( JHARKHAND). which is best institute for CS( assuming i dont make into maths dept. at iit)

i guess he is talking about the quality of department/education u get at the institutes and based on these criterias he is trying to figure out the institutes which are surely to make impact.
according to him faculty/students is something that is very important.

@spark why do you want to join mathematics MSc when you know
1. It is a MSc degree ( u will not be called engineer after you finish your education).
2. I have been told placements are not good for MSc degrees.
3. It takes 5 years to complete (Btech takes 4).
4. I guess somewhere it is mentioned that u can get cs at warangal which is way better than msc or mtech in some crappy subject.

well it goes like i am deeply interested in math. choice of a branch become very simple when u know u r interested in it.
for example jee 2005 5th ranker opted for physics MSc.
moreover i dont want to see myself studying chemical/civil enginnering and doing miserbaly bad at the institute. ---> This is what happens when u do not get a branch of ur choice. Chances of doing well in the field of your interest is very high .

Way to go spark1989 !! Its always true that one performs well in the field of his choosing and liking, regardless of what others think about it. Coz in the end, you are the one who is going to live life with the education and nobody else.
All The Best for the future!

Yes, it does sound good!
I am myself not a stranger to such situations. Right after my 10th exams I had to choose between a better college with no vocational subject, or a little less rated college with comp sci as vocational subject (here in maharashtra, +2 state board schools are called junior colleges). I chose CS. And it was quite a good decision since I really enjoyed the time there with CS programming. Then I incidentally met a guy who took a 1 yr drop (after 2 yrs prep for JEE at Bombay) and went to Kota. He got selected with rank 2672. Thats when I took up the challenge of JEE and went to Kota. Unlike others there who had done some sort of prep in their +2, I was quite a rookie there. But I tried my best and have improved a lot interms of understanding, way better than the crap maharashtra state syllabus. Although I didn't clear the JEE this year, I can rest relieved that I did give it a shot after a little-less prep of 10 months!
Ofcourse the disappointment will be there within myself of not being able to get into the IITs, I can sure think about a better future coz IITs are not the end of the world for me, or anybody else!
I have secured IT at a good college, and am looking forward to more enjoyment...
So its quite simple, Give Your Best!
