No matter what you do. No matter you sit for the exam or not. You can give JEE only the year you gave your class 12th boards and theyear just next to it.

1)do we have to make consecutive attempts or can there be an year gap ?? ans : consecutive attempts and no year gap.
2)what if i dont attempt JEE immediately after class XII...i mean am i eligible for studying in IIT if i crack JEE in consecutive two attempts later in life....say at the age of 25 (as netkid said 1983) ?? ans : No. you are not eligible for sitting in jee later in life. Only the year of passing +2 and next year is allowed.
3)if i apply and dont sit for the exam, does that count as an attempt ?? ans: both yes and no. yes if you pass +2 and no if you fail or drop +2.

but in the eligibility criteria in the advertisement of JEE 2008 its written...
anyone born on or after 1st October 1983 and who has passed +2 with 60% aggregate marks is eligible for JEE 2008 and for SC/ST candidates the upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years.
okay the consecutive 2 yrs factor is there........ but nowhere is it written that ------->> one can give JEE only the year one gave one's class 12th boards and the year just next to it.
can anyone tell where did you people finf this information......... is it written somewhere...... if yes , provide me with the source of info.
if no .......... how can u be so sure...
please answer

2)what if i dont attempt JEE immediately after class XII...i mean am i eligible for studying in IIT if i crack JEE in consecutive two attempts later in life....say at the age of 25 (as netkid said 1983) ??
is this ur query...so lemme tell u...
u can give 12th class exam upto some age (28 or 29).....
but if ur age is 26 years and u are giving boards this year...u wont be able to sit in IIT....thats all
that means....u must be sitting in boards this year (or u gave them last year) and ur age must be less than 25
ans 1) u have to give it consecutively....
ans 3)yes 1ce u are enrolled it will count...
