See what happens is......when BITS releases its first cut-off list for various courses, then many students who actually get selected in other gud colls lyk IIT nd NITs don't prefer BITS, so their seats remain vacant......as a result they go for a second counselling for filling those vacant seats by further lowering the cut-offs......they then hv a second Iteration......even if seats are not filled they go for a 3rd one......and furthermore the 4th one.......by each tym lowering the cut-offs a bit......dats what these iterations are.......hope u got it!!....:)

Dude, there are loads of people who left NITs and came to BITS in the 4th iteration, the moment they got a seat in BITS.
Iterations are simply, 'counsellings' which dont require your physical presence. You just have to post the draft and your preference form (which must be filled very carefully, fill in all options, hope you're aware of the dual degree MSc (hons) system). Keep checking bitsadmission.com for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th iteration results, and always pay whatever fees they ask you to, so that you dont miss out on a seat. If you dont get a seat, you are refunded the entire amount.
there are lots of people who got admission in the 2nd 3rd or 4th iteration (but didn't know of it!), they didnt check the results until it was too late to pay the fees... keep track of the dates of the results and deadlines for payment of fees

@Frazer : You are mostly right , except for the "don't prefer BITS part".
It isn't that nobody likes BITS and thats why BITS has to keep on having more iters.
Actually most of the top seats get filled after the 2nd iter itself , its mainly the vacancies created at the bottom , that get shuffled around.
The IIT counseling final results come between the BITS 1st and 2nd(1st July and 13th July approx) iters. So till the 2nd iter, , even those sure of something in the IITs , keep their names in the BITS 1st iter , for keeping their options open. But by the 2nd iter , they know which branch they've got in the IITs and then decide if they want to opt out or try for something at BITS.
Thats why , there is a large drop from 1st to 2nd iters. But b/w 2,3 there is a smaller drop.
And again in the end(last week of July) , there is a slightly larger drop , as most ppl would have got somewhere else and have withdrawn from BITS iter.
.Finally if a few seats , like in Bio Sci or Pharma are still there , BITS holds yet another round of iter.
For BITS , it costs NOTHING to hold these iters. They are able to fill up seats quite efficiently through this procedure.
