Frens ,I have this long range debate as to whta is a better option b/w the two .At the present scenario ,many people especially top rankers opt for ECE instead to CSE which used to b their first choice .Some experts say tht ECE has subjects related to computers n those pursuing it have appropriate knowledge of the same and the core course itself aswell, thereby giving them a double bbenefit to enter into IT sectior as well. But CSE student cant do the rhe reverse n have equal knowldege of ECE topics also.So what do u think .Should one go for ECE or CSE as their first preferrence, keeping in mind the future of the coursewith respect tto the industry scenario in india or abroad in coming four years n thereafter also--

Looking forward to interesting views.

Wrong... ECE and CSE are different topics. ECE covers only 10-20% of the syllabus of CSE (as told by the ECE HOD in my counselling at IIT B) Also, CSE has some topics fom ECE which are required to understand the working of computers. What you need to understand is that a project or an undertaking requires not just one type of engineer - both electrical and computer science engineers and others are required for projects. CSE students deal with the software, logic, working and programming aspect, where as ECE engineers work with the physical circuitry aspect. Also, ECE engineers can go in different fields - like power distribution, transmission and generation, etc. So its a very vast field out there really and neither branch is expected to lose any scope in the foreseeable future.

But many EEE,ECE,IT and other non computer related branch graduates have been recruited by the IT sector companies like Infosys,TCS etc.,

Also If one takes CSE-- after 4 yrs of learning it-the technology and the market requiremtnts wudnot b the same as it were athe time of pursuing it.In tht case would it wise enough to take it??

I wud prefer electrical engineering over computer science engineering bcoz an electrical engg student after completing his btech in elec engg can do mtech in cse but the reverse is not possible.

Dear friend , the same question I had asked from respected Prof. Dheeraj Sanghi ( Prof CSE-IITK now Director LNMIIT)  recently.

I am giving abstract of his reply for information of all concerned :-

" In general, one's career spans 40 years of work life. And no single industry is going to dominate those 40 years. Therefore, to plan to be in a particular industry because of career/money is simply wrong. The career choice has to be based on interest and not current salary structures. There is no correlation known to mankind between salary structures of year X, and salary structures of year X+40. And remember, you will be making most of your money in year X+40. If you chose your career based on your interest/aptitude, then the chances are you will continue to perform well, and you will have a good job even if the sector does not do well. However, IT (like many other industries) will remain strong, and good persons in large numbers will continue to find good jobs. In short, if you have an interest in IT, join a good college (and LNMIIT is more than just being good). If you have an interest in some other field, but was looking at IT only from money perspective, then don't join IT."
