hi! guys since the colleges are gonna start , so just wanted to know what are we supposed to study in the first year and shud i carry ncert books there?

the first year syllabus of most of the colleges is same for all branches....and regarding the topics u 'll study there will depend on the college u r joining...
well! the topics will include advanced theories of what we all have studied till now.....perhaps in IITs the topics studied in 1st yr r basically :
Physics
Chemistry (Organic in 1st sem)
Mathematics
Computer Science (C++/JAVA)
Engineering Graphics
Electrical Engineering
Technical Communication
Thermodynamics
Environmental Education
Biotechnology....
i guess they r few more but i dnt remember them....
so i think u shud first confirm what all will be taught in ur coll, nd then tk ur books accordingy....cheers :)

in BITS apart from the technical education and environment studies we have General Biology and Workshop and moreover it is not eng. drawing but eng. graphics (cause in BITS it is done on comps not thru drafters)

ya! agree wid u...it is same Engineering Graphics in IITs too....didn't knw one word out of place can make a lot of change...lol

At BITS , First Year , you study the following subjects:
These subjects are common to MSc Hons and BE branches , for ALL streams.
1)Phy 1 and 2 : Mechanics , Waves , EM etc, the 11th and 12th std topics but in greater detail.
2)Chem : 1and 2:Again 11th and 12th , but in greater detail
3)Maths1 and 2:Vector calculus and Linear Algebra
4)Thermo(1 sem) : Eng Thermodynamics , not like your +2 Thermod
5)General Biology(1 sem) :Not the medical bio , but Bio oreinted towards Bio Engg.
6)Comp Prog : Start off with LC3 , an assembly language , to teach the very basics of a computer.Then start with C.Little Linux is also taught.
7)Probab and Stats.(1 sem)
8) Workshop Prac(1 sem) :A practical course , you learn how to work in a workshop
9)Engg Graphics : Engg drawing except its done on a computer using AutoCad
In 2nd year , there is a mix of common and specialized courses.Electives are allowed from 2nd yr on.
Below are the courses that are compulsory for ALL ppl with BE(pure BE and Dual BE)
1)Maths 3:Diff eqn
2)Electrical Sciences 1(about Semiconductors) and 2(about machines)
3)Mechanics of Solids
4)Stru and Prop of matter(basic material science)
5)Technical report writing
6)Principles of Mgmt
7)Measurement Techniques(Lab course) MT1 is about P, C , Bio (compulsory for all incl. pure MSc s)(6 experiments in Bio and Chem , 14 in Phy)
MT2 is about basic experiments Electronics , Electrical , Mech, Chemical and Civil(6 experiments in each field)
(Again compulsory for all incl. pure MSc s)
