Hey guys many of you must be confused wether you should go for bits or join nit's.
Well then let me solve your problem by saying that you cannot compare these two institute .Both work on different platforms and have their own meriits and demarits . But i being an nitian can highlisht all the good points and bad points about nit . While my fellow bitsians can highlight good and bad points about bits.
GOOD Points :-
1. Excellent infrastructure
See guys nits are centerally funded universities .So they receive hge amount of funding from the central government and also from many foreign organisations .All the professors and staff are paid by the central government . If you get a chance to visit any city which has an nit then you will find that the nit is also included as an esential part of the cities infrastructure in their master plan. You can note that by observing that all the city maps, Road signs have directions of the institute . My nit (jaipur ) is located on j.l.n mrag which is the prime road of jaipur city and even the most important hospitals (private ) and minister's house dont have dedicated cuts for vehicals to reach them from the main road but the government has provideed dedicated toad cut and traffic signals for our college. There is a police car standing 24 hours for the college. Government has provided a dedicated power house for the campus . And a lot of other such things. I mean to say that the government provides each and every esential thing and its like a small city within a city.
2. Interaction with the iit's and future development.
See guys back in 2002 our country was in crisis of good engineers . Government decided to open up new iit's but failed to do so because building up of new iit's from scrap was a vey expensive thing to do and government couldn't meet this expense . Moreover it would take a hell lot of time for simply bringing these new IIT's to full functional ability (although they are making new IIT's now but it is just to generate a larger vote bank). So to overcome these problems our government decided to raise the standards of the REC's which exsisted in those days and rename them as nits and allow them to follow the footprints of their elder brother IIT's by providing them with huge fundings and upgrading their infra. So like this 5 years went by and these institutes started to function as NIT's enjoying a status of national importance and receiving huge funds from the center. In DECEMBER 2007 indian prliament passed the NIT ACT (like the IIT ACT passed in 1961) and after this act the nits have become even more powerfull and important for the countery. Since the act has been passed just 6
months ago so we have not realised its importance and its result is still not visible but in future their will be a tramendous growth in the status and infra of nit's . So time has great to offer to nit's.Our director MR.Dhaiya is also a senior professor at IIT-Delhi and has been given 2 years leave from IIT-Delhi so that he can help in implementing the same system in our campus as that followed in IITs.
Back in 2006 the central government was planning to convert MNIT (NIT Jaipur ) into IIT Jaipur but due to political issue this couldn't happen. So you can imagine the infrastructue and importance of the institute.
3. Degree
The degree offered by any nit are accepted and is recocnized all round the globe juts like IIT's and bits degree.
Bad points
1. poor managment
Nit's being government institutes has extremely poor managment and students have to suffer because of it. In my college even if you want to collect a form regarding any issue you will have to enquire many department s about the availabily of form and then would have to rome from one office to another just to know the procedure of filling p the form . If there is some problem with your hostel fan then you will have to give atleat 10 days to institute's electrical department to get it repaired for you. You are not informed about anything and you will have to do many jobs which are supposed to be done by the college clerks.
2. Adjustment Problem
Nits being government funded institutes has a very nominal fee structure and anyone can afford it . So you will find students from even those sections of society which you cant even imagine and reservation adds to it But in the positive sens it helps you to learn a lot and you will be able to adjust well later on in life .

Actually the thing is if you are from iit and you are applying to some foreign university then you will be having an extra edge above others and the university people will treat you as if you are having something extra in you . But if you are from a noniit indian college then whatever its image be within your country (wehter it is any nit or bits or dce or pec or ism or any college ) you will be simply considered as an INDIAN ENGINEER . So tag doesnt matter much .Many of my seniors are persuing their MS courses in these foreign colleges. But you will be having an extra edge above the remaining engineering indian graduates who are from not so premier institutes and dont have their degree recognized round the globe.

Good Points:
1)Brand Value , excellent reputation among Foreign Univs and Recruiters
2) Very good alumni network and support
3) Very Updated Curriculum(Like we don't use Drafters for Mech Drawing , we directly use AUTOCad , latest labs , courses are very relevant to the job-market and the industry. ) During Placements at the Goa Campus , the Director of NVidia , India(a BITS Alumni) came and commented that the Electronics students were missing out on many of the latest technologies in the market. The Profs took it seriously and from the new sem , the extra topics were introduced.
I didn't think much about this point until recently I read this negative article about DCE in the HT: http://in.news.yahoo.com/hindustantimes/20080505/r_t_ht_nl_general/tnl-delhi-college-of-disarray-7244580_1.html
4)Very good Practical Industry/Research training(Practice School , Labs etc)
5)Good and well trained , dedicated Faculty
Bad Points
1)Not that good perception among the General Public , lousy media relations , reluctance to release important data. Lots of people have all kinds of ideas about BITS , because BITS is not much talked about. Apart from BITS taking some of the blame , a good amount also goes to the media for over-hyping the IITs/IIMs , mainly for the Coaching Industry. Take for Eg the Quota issue. Its made to look as if just the IITs and IIMs are going to have it implemented , not the NITs , DCE etc.And also , ppl said implement it elsewhere but not in the IITs and IIMs.As if all other coll. are useless.
2)Pilani Campus is a bit isolated but its very well equipped from the inside.Goa campus is still new.Hy Campus is far better well-located.
3)Elitist : In pursuit of "Meritocracy" and "new Technologies" , BITS ends up catering mainly to the middle class english-speaking urban people and largely leaves out the urban poor and rural India.Never mind the BITS's scholarships for the poor people , how can a bright villager(who can clear the JEE) be comfortable answering a Computer-Based Exam? And what about the English Section? While the JEE allows Hindi , no such provision is there in BITSAT.
But then again , such behavior is seen all across the Private Sector.
4)While much cheaper than most Private Coll.s , BITS is much costlier than the NITs and about 20-30% costlier than the IITs.But interestingly , if the proposed fee hikes for the IITs goes through , BITS will become much cheaper than the IITs!!
5)Much lesser overall quantity of research.BITS does research mainly in profitable and marketable areas , while the IITs do all round research. But then again , IITs get much more "free" Govt. funding for R&D; BITS hasn't got that luxury.

I would disagree with jamjam in this issue...I have been a part of the student cell for International relations unit and one must surely check out the importance these institutes give to Bits and Bitsians...There have been atleast 9 selections in Stanford alone which shows why Bitsians are not considered as any other Indian Engineer
I can name many institutes which actually recognize Bitsians on par with many other engineering students(including IIT's)

Thats right , like I have mentioned , BITS has a very good repo with most Foreign Univs. This year , 6 students( both Campuses combined) ,3rd yrites have , been selected for a Summer Internship at London School of Economics. As far as Foriegn Univ are concerned plz check out this post at BITS360.com I am not posting it here , because it makes certain comparisons.
http://bits360.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1225
It is quite certain that BITSians have an advantage.

Though I never try to differntiate Pilani and Goa campus at any time this post would be a bit specific to the Pilani campus...This post is big and these points are in addition to the points given by bits360
Goods:
- Alumni: The support they give..mentally ,financially and in all aspect is the best thing that happened and happens to us

- Clubs and departments: We have the highest(in number) and the best clubs and departments in India both academically and others...infact our cul fest and tech fest which are quite famous are completely managed by the student community involving inputs from hundreds of students....Ex: The photgraphy club...one can pusrue his interest and learn a lot from these clubs
- The Culture: The culture developed by our seniors in a way helps in improving our personality and brings out the best in us.
- Reserach opportunities: Pilani campus has few of the very good professors and we get many good projects to work on as a part of our course.Apart from that there is Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), Pilani where you have an opportunity to work with the scientists on very important projects(the reason is why EEE in Pilani campus is famous)...there are scientists having their research goin on topics like MEMS NANOSCIENCE etc etc(the list is huge)...Infact our tech fests are partly judged by these scientists giving us an opportunity to show our talents.
- Entertainment: No compulsory attendance and with such good LAN one can enjoy his life and shape his career in whatever direction he wants...Probably gaming experts
- Electives: We have the largest pool of electives offered in any college in India...more than 150 in topics like Image processing, Artificial engineering, and so many courses(will upload the complete list as soon as possible) and someone asked there is no ECE in Pilani but Hyd has ECE...itz becuase it has been a trend for long time that EEE people takeup electives related to communication like DCN,ComNet etc etc and endup learning more than what ECE students learn in communication...Apart from that there are many electives related to management(Services Management system), Humanities(Professional Ethics), Philosophy(comparative religion) and so many more
- Course Structure: The course structure of all branches are continously evaluated every semester with imputs from student community by a body called as SENATE involving professors from every branch all the deans and student body.
- Flexibilities: Let it be the transfer from one branch to other or one institute to other Bits has the best system in any engineering college....
Bads:
- Isolation: The nearest city is some 4 hours away which is the major problem pilani campus has been facing for a long time...But it gives good opportunity for students to develop their skills in other aspects though many miss the city life :(
- Placements: Placement scenario in Pilani is not as expected partly due to two sem placement we have...While most of the colleges have placement in one sem giving lot of time to contact with companies and convince and giving them the best facilities Bits is a bit lacking here..though there are continual efforts to improve our placement statistics
- Extreme Climate: We have subzero temps in winter and arnd 50C in summer causing some of the problems...but many get used to it...and there is a saying here "Live in Pilani and you can have a good life anywhere in the world in any climate"
- Pressure: There is a lot of pressure to perform properly in your academics with so many exams and tests goin on especially in your first year...Though taken negatively by many(including me
)...I have heard from my seniors that it actually helps us in performing better in future with so much pressure in the companies.
So decide where NIT stands

our general tutorials, class assignments come up to 20% of the course which happen weekly(once or twice)...so 6 subjects means a test almost everyday...Apart from that we have two tests 20% weightage each in which most of the time one of the tests is OPEN BOOK(you get any books you want to the exam hall type paper)
If both the test are closed book then your end semester exam(40%) has partly Open book component...With so much competition from students...Bistian life can be divided into 2 days
Day before Exam and Day not before exam or more aptly the Night before exam and Night not before exam
