IISER => Indian Institute of Science Education and Research IISERs are there in Kolkata, Pune and Mohali.
IISERs are research oriented institutes, and hence cannot be compared directly with other institutes viz iits, nits, etc. IISERs are new institutes which the govt has set up to fill the gap for scientists and professionals in the RND sector.
At IISER, you get 5 year integrated M.S. course. The subject for your majors have to be chosen after 2 years. These 2 years are enough time to gauge your potential and interest. You can get your MS in Physics, chemistry , maths or biology.
After coming here, it is not necessary that you need to continue in research afterwards. You can get any job in any big company. Every company need people for rnd, it is one of the most imp thing for a company.
And yes, people at IISER do lots of other things than studies... dont think that iiser is a very boring coll with only nerds.
I am a student of IISER, Kolkata. If anyone has any questions about IISER, course contents, future prospects, etc can contact me at rajarshi_great@hotmail.com
For more details about admission, visit www.iiser-admissions.in Cheers,

look....
FOR iiser.....
it requires patience.....
ya it is one of the good colleges....
but point it has different kind of advantage
its into the research field ....
ya i know...the placements r also the but studyinf there wiklkl urge u to become a researcher ..it will take time ...
i will rather prefer....
some state govt college than IISER...
BECAUSE former will give u BTECH DEGREE....with placement sure....
in IISER......if u r entitled to become.....researcher then its ok......................
but for working in MNC Company and 10 - 5 job.....getting 50k pm.........
then its better not to have IISER..
i m not saying against anybody its my thinking....
DON..

Even if you want to have a MNC job, IISER may be an option for you.
Once again I am stressing on the fact that joining IISER doesn't mean that you have to become a scientist. And no one is going to force you to become one.. only that the environment here is such that many are motivated for it. And regarding placements and packages, it is expected that the packages will be at par with those of Msc students from iit.

@ above comment
How do you know so ? What happens if it is a new institute ? It has already gained popularity because it is a central govt. college and it has been given same status like iit. Our faculty is among the best in India. Our research facilities and labs are among the best in India. Popular researchers, scientists and intellectuals believe it will revolutionize research in basic sciences in India.

I also dont want to fight, but prevent people from getting misconceptions about IISER
Again,
IISER DOESNOT MEAN THAT YOU ONLY HAVE TO DO RESEARCH IN SOME LABORATORY
YOU CAN JOIN ANY COMPANY WITH SAME, IF NOT HIGHER SALARY THAN BTECH GRADS.
What you think is just your imaginations, why do you want other people to think like you ?

And talking about MONEY, DO YOU KNOW THE SALARY OF A SCIENTIST WORKING IN A MNC ???
IT IS MUCH MUCH GREATER THAN ANY BTECH GRAD WORKING IN THE SAME COMPANY !!!!
And your comment "what to do with research " ??
This is not at all expected from a intelligent person ! Without research, me dear, you wouldn't be sitting in front of your computer !
And about money, DO you know that all students of IISER are paid a stipend of Rs4000 by the Govt of India , right from the FIRST year. So you can imagine the salary expected after 5 years !!!!
