Guys, based on my 6 year old experience in the industry, in India as well as abroad; I have come to the conclusion that its the students who make a college good or bad. Today, MIT-Manipal can boast of a better infrastructure than IIT-KGP but does that make MIT-Manipal a college to be considered in the top 20+? The answer is NO.
I have worked with students from some of the best engg colleges in India as well as abroad. What I have found out so far is that students from IITs,IT-BHU, BITS-Pilani, VJTI, NIT-Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Calicut, DCE, IIIT-H, NSIT are amongst the best in our country. The variation in the quality of students at these insitutes may range from 85-100 on a max score of 100.There is absolutely no doubt about it. Other colleges may boast of some stupid college rankings etc, but the truth remains that the colleges I mentioned are amongst the most sought after colleges in the country and students from these colleges can get recognition almost everywhere.
And most importantly, never judge a college by the highest job offer. Some of the best students in some of the best engg colleges dont appear for campus interviews as they are already confident of getting admitted to a top school in the US for their masters. Besides, companies like Schlumberger which offer packages close to 30 lacs per annum arent the most sought after by the best students. Its a dream job only for students of Mech or Chem engg. Dont get surprised if an IIT- Elec engg student joins a 7 lac job offer with a technology company rather than a 10 lac job offer with a consulting company.
What is more important is the brand name of the college and degree combined, that you slogged to get for 4 years. The best part about studying with some of the best minds of the country is the holistic personality development that one achieves while studying at these colleges. Almost everyone changes jobs withink first 6 months of the career and its here that the difference lies between those who studied at IITs or those who studied at VIT,MIT etc. A civil engg graduate from IIT-Kanpur may not get a job offer from Microsoft of 9 lacs per annum in campus placements, but within a span of 2 years, he may have started a company of his own or might be earning 15 lacs per annum as a chief design architect of a premier MNC.
So, as long as one is able to make it to the list of following colleges, one can be 90% confident of a secure career and a life - changing experience.
IITs,IT-BHU, BITS-Pilani, VJTI, NIT-(Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Calicut,Allahabad) DCE, IIIT-H, NSIT

Thats not entirely true... In the end.. it depends on oneself...Even a an extremely hard working guy at a college like VIT, Manipal or SRM .. can get a grt placement oppertunity... a overconfident brat of an IIt can face hell.. so getting into a good college is not the last thing....

Sushmit, I think you didnt get my point. I was stating why and which are the best engg colleges of India. There is no doubt that a hard working student from VIT, Manipal etc can also do something good in life. But, one student alone cant change the culture of a college completely. I think you can barely count on fingers ppl from colleges like SRM, VIT, Manipal etc who have made it big in corporate world. I will be glad if you tell me a few names from theri prestigious alumni list.

few ppl do make it to IIMs even from there and every 1 in 5 or 10 who makes it to the IIMs would probably be doing exceedingly well.

lagta hai yahan gyaanibaba ka gyan hume dhoka de raha hai....see,getting into an IIT is always difficult..and those who clear the jee through good general ranks...hats off to all those ppl....but dont forget that success in life is a much wider concept...getting in an IIT...fine...but you cant stop working....one of my seniors studying in IIT-R was very overconfident after his selection....and literally stopped studying after joining the institute...today he finds himself ineligible for placements courtesy of a poor show in academics(he got at least one or two backs in almost all the exams and later cleared it with poor percentages)....isn't it a shame...while on the other hand...his schoolmate who was doing mechanical engineering at NIT Raipur maintained a gpa of about 9 throughout the years...(he could not clear IIT in the mains) and now he has got a decent package from NTPC....he plans to join the public sector giant and along with it also prepare for CAT..coz he will get ample time to do that.....
i think you are/were a student of VJTI...isliye u included it in that list...it really doesn't deserve to be alongside institutes like the IITs,IIIT-H or NSIT...

@gyanibaba
Its everyone's dream to get into IIT or a good nit or IIIT. Out of about 3.5 lac students appearing for iit exam and 8 lac appearing for AIEEE exam , how many can get into these ????? obviously a fixed number. rest of us have to join some other colleges. and to say that quality of students joining other cilleges is not good--- mr. do u know on each mark how many students are there in these exams----sometimes even 1000 in aieee .and then how will u judge their quality. no doubt top 1% might be of a better quality but that doesnt mean rest 4% are of inferior quality. statistics show that competition is between top 5% .
Its a number game. we cant blame anyone but the system.
so pl dont try to dishearten those who are joining not so reputed colleges .

If you do MS or MBA or even MTech from a good/very good place the value of your BA/BS/BE is reduced to a small fraction or even neglected. Similarly if you are very good in your work at the job, other things become sencondary.

@parveen - nicely said
@akshay - i heard that MTechs from IITs dont hold the same value as a BTech from IIT. its bcoz competition after graduation is lesser, than before it. What do you think about that?

Well, I think that is true. That is why I said MS or MBA from a good place or MTech from maybe a very good place, mostly abroad. MBA from IIMs, ISB etc.

Gyanbala has a point but not entirely correct. There is no doubt that IITs, BITS, top 6-7 NITs, DEC, NSIT, IIIT Hyd (Definitely not VJTI) are the best engg colleges. But what you have written after that is not correct.
Those getting in these top colleges has an edge over others. But after that it depends on how these people make use of opportunities given to them. A hard working ordinary engg college student can DEFINITELY surpass a careless student in IIT or BITS or anywhere. So the edge is there, the rest depends on the students. It is like that Bansal Coaching has many selected in IITs. But can everyone in Bansal claim that. Or those not in Bansal don't get selected ?
I know few who have studied in very ordinary Engg Colleges in Bombay and got selected in IIMs. Now can anyone say that they will be any less than those from IITs, BITS or IIIT.
So the conclusion is that yes these colleges are the best. The students there has an edge. But what happens in future depend upon what they do in future.

What matters more is the MS or MBA and finally the actualy work quality in the job.

MS = Masters in Science
equivalent of MSc/MTech in India.
MS is present in the USA.
Good value if done from a good university.
You need to give GRE, TOEFL etc and have good research/project work etc to apply to a good place.
