How is NIT Rourkela in comparision to other NIT's? I believe it is much better than Manipal.

Yup, its far better than Manipal. Campus is too good and even placements r better.. actually ther's no comparision. The director is an ex-HOD of Hydraulics dept. of IIT-Kgp, and he's made very effort to make it like a IIT. this NIT is a interantional brand now, after getting funding from Swiss Bank for its futher infrastr devlopment. May issue of India today rankd NIT-Rourkela 17th. Myself: 2003 passout, and belong to da 1st batch to get da B.Tech. from NIT.

Hi DEV, mech and ceramics r the best. mech b'coz of the separate hydraulics, robotics and CAD/CAM centre and moreover the directors sepcialization.. (somehow he favors a sort of ) ceramics.. da best in entire country.. its da only dept. to be declred as Centre of Relevence and Excellence (CORE) by AICTE and TIFAC, and the only ceramic dept. in the country to get dat status. i too belong to da same fraternity. Research is da best here, continuously rankd da best branch in da campus since last 4 yrs. the only other instis in india offering ceramic r IT-BHU and college of ceramic technology (affiliated to jadavpur univ, calcutta). besides, electronics shud be da third option. do reply if u want to knw more abt ceramic engg.

well, da placements r very nice in da branches in like elecx, mech, compsci. my school friend was in IT-BHU elex, when he passed out he had 3 jobs, at IBM, HCl Tech. and Freescale Tech., he's now in da latter.. getting a package of 7.5 L p.a. now. Well, da starting packages differ on da basis of branch, company, and most importantly, whether its s/w or "core industry". the average packages in s/w are slightly higher for branches like ceramic, meta, civil etc. .. but the package is very high for da ppl in branches like elex, mech, electical or even chemical, opting for "core" (i.e. branch-specific job)... much higher than what they wud hv got in s/w. but, u must NOT sit for campus i/w of s/w companies, and then u can negotiate best. this is what my friend did. so it all depends... if u want to know abt the prospects of ceramics in BHU... actually da worst. the only job these ppl hv is s/w. jobs in ceramic industry doesn't pay more than 2.5 L starting, but that's just da start. but remember dat ceramic industry job prospects r better in NIT-rourkela, due to the blooming ceramic industry in that region, incl calcutta. of corse, u can do MBA aftr ceramic frm BHU also. my branchmates hv done MBA from NITIE, IIIT-Allahabad, and even IIM-Calcutta, and r now v. well placed. another option is to go for MS abroad, which u can easily get with ful scholraship, COMPARED TO ANY OTHER BRANCH in india... Ceramic and Materials Science is a booming industry abroad, only second to telecom in germany, and third in US (aftr IT and telecom). hope u benefit from this info.

hey DEV .. congrats. i tried to give an overview of placement and other options in non-IITs. According to me IT-BHu is da best option., as ther always an option for branch change, which is slightly easier compared to IITs. secondly, u always hv an option to swich to software (i hv written as "s/w" previously) for placement, or go abroad for MS/Ph.D. thers excellent opportunity in this field, at least compared to da branches u mentioned above... ISM-MINNING ISM-MINERAL ISM-ELECTRICAL IIT ROORKEE- GEOLOGY IIT ROORKEE- GEO PHYSICS IIT ROORKEE- PULP AND PAPER ISM -GEOLOGY ISM- GEOPHYSICS are good only if u hv interest in these fields...... (rarest possibility)... ppl take these branches bcoz of IIT tag, n get frustued thru out life. so, job opportunity wise, ISM -ELECTRONICS is very good... so the second choice. i am considering dat ther is no branch change, in da worst case. thierd in line.... wud be any branch in IIT-R.. its all da same. software is still open to these ppl too. so if u really care for da iit tag, prefer pulp n paper over the other branches....

hello arsenal2007, Comp Sci at NIT-rkl is also good. the dept has recently got huge funding from the world bank and swiss bank for further expansion of the com lab. the scene has totally changd ever since prof. K.C. Sadangi has taken over the charge as the Diector of the insti. but remember.. campus placement of electronics is better thn com sci for obvious reasons.. so if u don't hv much inclination for IT.. better opt for electronix here. cheers.
