Press Note - States, who either don’t have an NIT as of now or are Highly deficient in having Technical Institutions, will be compensated by allocating more seats
| | 17:42 IST |
Secretary, Department of Higher Education, held a meeting with Secretaries (Technical Education) of a few States/UTs. Issues discussed were admission in NITs for 2008, scheme of Polytechnics, networking of Institutions, reservation of seats for States/UTs lacking facilities of technical education, establishment of new technical institutions, etc. 2. National Institute of Technology (NIT) Act 2007 came into force on 15th August 2007. This is the first year of admissions in NITs after the NIT Act coming into force and NITs getting declared as Institutions of National Importance. 3. Rationale for decision of MHRD for filling up of 50% of the total seats of NITs which are meant for candidates not belonging to the State where a particular NIT is located, on all India merit basis, was discussed in the meeting. In view of apprehensions expressed by a few of States/UTs which feared loss of seats in NITs to eligible candidates from their States/UTs on account of this policy change, a decision was taken to compensate to the extent possible, such of the States who either don’t have an NIT as of now or are highly deficient in having technical institutions especially the States in North Eastern Region and who may be adversely affected by the above decision of filling up of seats purely on all India merit basis, by allocating more seats under the Scheme of “Reservation of seats in technical institutions for State/UTs lacking such facilities”. 4. In addition, due consideration will be given for establishment of an NIT in States which do not have an NIT. Establishment of an NIT in Manipur is already under consideration of MHRD. The contours of Government of India proposal for extending special assistance to set up Polytechnics in such districts which do not have a Polytechnic as of now, was also discussed in detail so as to be in a position to establish them on priority immediately after getting the necessary approvals for the proposed scheme. Details of the proposed National Mission on Education through ICT were also discussed in the meeting. Deptt. Of Higher Education, Ministry of HRD PIB, Dated: Asadha 05, 1930/June 26, 2008 HB/VL/SB |

i think delhi students are going to be benefitted the most as they already have 85% seats through CEE and only 15% for outside delhi. At the same time they enjoy benefit of getting chance in all NIT's through AIR.
