(a) HF

HF is used in etching glass. It has the ability to dissolve glass by reacting with SiO₂ , the major component of most glasses. This dissolution process can be defined as-

SiO₂ + 4HF

SiF₄ + 2H₂ O

SiO₂ + 6HF

H₂ [SiF₆ ] + 2H₂ O
