Value of 'a' for which sum of squares of roots of    x2- (a-2)x -a -1 = 0 assumes least value?
Ans: a=1

it shud stand for - sign
sum of roots= (a-2)
product of roots=-a+1
now spose roots r p and q
p^2+q^2=(p+q)^2-2pq
=
a^2-4a+4+2a-2
a^2-2a+2
now for maxima f'=0
2a-2=0
so a=1
