please clarify the concept of location of roots of quadratic equation...

  when you plot the points in a graph you will get a parabola (i.e a 'U' shaped curve)

the points where the parabola intersects x axis are the roots of the equation. 
 
 
For eg. Let ( x2 + x -2 = 0) be the equation.Then if we put x=1 we will get 0.
Therefore 1 is a root of the equation.
