what does logarithms actually mean and wht are they used for?

logaritms..in layman's language are actually functions that simplify calculations by converting multiplications to additions, exponential to multiplications and so on...

our ears are logarithmic..meaning if u double intensity of sound it wont feel double ..but 100 times would do as log of 100 to base 10 is 2.

The logarithm of a number is the exponent by which another fixed value, the base, has to be raised to produce that number. For example, the logarithm of 1000 to base 10 is 3, because 1000 is 10 to the power 3: 1000 = 10³ = 10 × 10 × 10. More generally, if x = b^y, then y is the logarithm of x to base b, and is written log_b(x), solog₁₀(1000) = 3.

whenever... we have to perform calculations to powers... we use a predefined function... and that function is named as LOGARITHM...
