hey ! can ne one tell me that if it is given that a cubic equation has 1 real and 2 imaginary roots, what information can we get about the graph of the function . (bascially not only a cubic equn. but any equation of degree n ) also in case of a cubic equation ,how many points will there be where f'(x) = 0 (where f(x) is the cubic equation )

If a cubic equation has 1 real and 2 imaginary roots then its graph cuts X-axis at only one point.

ok thanx , for ur response but of course i know that it will cut the axis at 1 point.but can we say that there exists at least 2 points where f ' (x) = 0(just like in the case of 3 real roots ) or is it that we cant comment about the derivative being zero anywhere

real roots says it intersect with x-axis
f(x)=ax3+bx2+cx+d f ' (x)=3ax2+2bx+c so for 2 real roots b2 should be greter than 3ac.
take an example x3-x2+x-1=0 have 1 real root but do not have 2 real point where f ' (x) = 0

ok f(x) cuts the x-axis only at one point but it is not necessary that there wont be any point where f'(x) = 0

yes it is not neccesary that it wont have any point where f '(x)=0 but in general we cant say that it will have these point or not.
