I think the correct equation is x² + (a+b)x + (1-a-b) = 0 where (a,b,x)

Discriminant >= 0

=> (a+b)² - 4(1-a-b) = 0

=> b² + (2a+4)b + (a² + 4a - 4) >= 0

Since coefficient of b² is positive hence discriminant of above equation should be less than zero.

=> (2a + 4)² - 4(a² + 4a - 4) <= 0

=> 16 <= 0

which is not possible.

Hence no real values of a exist.
