1. This happened in the Heathrow airport, London. John had just missed a flight. So he decided to kill sometime in the Cafeteria until his next flight was ready. A man walked in asked John?s permission to join him in his table. Sipping coffee they began to chat. The stranger told that he was a pilot and in the course of his work he has flown all over the world. This man was a Russian. He posed a very interesting puzzle: One fine day I just decided to fly around-no fixed destination-just fly around. I took away from Leningrad in a northerly direction. I flew continuously for 500 km. Then I turned my direction flew eastward 500 km. I turned direction again. I turned south and covered another 500 km. again I turned my direction and flew 500 km in the westerly direction and landed.Did he land at Leningrad (or) to the North of it (or) to the South of it (or) to the West of it (or) to the East of it? What is the distance and direction from Leningrad if he didn?t land at Leningrad?

probably the wind direction would have made him not reach back Leningrad :)

he did not landed at leningrad because when he travels 500km towards west he was just above the leningrad then he landed so it would have taken time so he would have crossed leningrad while landing he will be towards west of leningrad at few kilometers form leningrd (this distance must equal to the distance which is reqiured for a landing of a plane.)

it's nothing to do with the landing of the plane and all
i think the plane will land east of leningrad. this is coz of the curvature of the earth. 500 km while going east from the 2nd place to 3rd place, is not the same as going from 4th place to leningrad back again..

note that leningrad is 60 deg latitude so he is very near the NP (he is in russia) so maybe if he flies 500 KM north, he crosses NP then when he turns east means west away from leningrad then he moves more south, so everytime he turns he goes away from the postion of Lgrad
so he doesnt rreach back home PS not possible in india :)

well did you consider the rotation of the earth . he travels 2000 km in this time the earth might have rotated through some considerable angle which may favour or not favour his landing in the same place. plz. reply.
