it is simple to see that the det. vanishes by putting a=1 and also its derivative. so,                      det.=k * square of (a-1)..........(1)
by comparing the coeff. of square of 'a' from the det. and RHS  of equ 1 we get  k = -1

just calculate the determinant in the usual simple fashion.

answer is -1*(a-1)2

determinant of     a b c
                         d e f
                         g h i
is
a(ei-fh) - b(di-gf) + c(dh-ge)
