Yes, they are equal.

Since both the given quantities are positive, lets square them. You'll see that both of them are equal.

Actually, I was solving a physics numerical and got the answer in the first form but only the second form was in the options. I'm still clueless about how to derive the second form from first form.

1 stupid way is to write this as a-b, then equate a2+b2 with 8 and 2ab with 2.(3)1/2.

Now solve for a,b.
