combination is selection.....the sequence or how many pairs will be there is of no concern....
Permutation is arrangement..how many and what type pairs will be there is also essential..
...
for example___
out of 3 students u want two...
Permutations can be 3 as three pairs ow 2 are possible...
but in selection or combination u want only 2 students thats it...no ow pairs are not of concern...

permutation means selecting a given number of things and arranging them.here the order of the arrangement is taken into account. but combination means only selection of things.here the order in which the things are arranged are not taken into account.
for example, let there be three letters a,b and c. we are to find out the number of permutations of these three letters taking three at a time.
the number of arrangements possible with these three letters are:
abc bca cab acb bac cba .here we take into account the order of arrangement of the things. so the required number of permutations will be 6.
now we are to find out the number of combinations possible with the three letters taking three at a time. here each selection consists of the three letters a,b, c irrespective of their order.so the number of selections , ie, the number of combinations is 3
