Questions and answers

Question:

It is know that entropy is zero when a pure crystalline substance

is at absolute zero.  Theoretically, does this mean that atomic motion

(electrons, etc.) stops also?

------------------------------------------------

Zero entropy means that the system is in a single quantum

mechanical state, in particular, the lowest, the ground state.
  This means

that the particles of the system have adjusted their motions to lower their energy as much as possible.  However, because of quantum mechanical effects there is still residual motion of the particles.  This is measurable and

detectable and is often called zero point motion.  It is particularly

observable in the motion of the atoms when they are studied by x-rays.  Even in the lowest energy state of a metal, the electrons are still moving around keeping the energy as low as possible.

Question: Do sodas conduct electricity?

------------------------------------------------

Soda DOES conduct electricity.Reasoning for this is as

follows.  In order to conduct electricity a solution must contain dissolved ions.  These ions (or electrolytes) allow the electric current to move through the solution.  Some solutions do not conduct very well since the

concentrations of ions are low.  Others conduct very well.  Soda has

carbonation which is just carbon dioxide dissolved in water.  When carbon

dioxide is dissolved in water a weak acid system is created in which carbonic acid (h2co3), bicarbonate ion (hco3+), and carbonate ion (co3++) exist in solution.
(There are also other things dissolved in there which probably contribute too).  The presence of these ion forms, as well as others, will allow an applied current to pass through the solution, although it will probably be somewhat weak.

Question: What is the biggest molecule known to man?

------------------------------------------------

A very interesting question....the largest

molecule is probably a sheet of graphite, which is a two-dimensional sheet of covalently bonded carbon atoms.  Of course, some proteins are pretty huge also.  Then there is diamond, which is a 3D covalently bonded network of carbon atoms.  The fact that diamond is a gigantic molecule is what gives it its unique properties.

Question: What is the smallest molecule?

------------------------------------------------

Well, if we define a molecule as something that has more than one

atom, the smallest molecules would be diatomic molecules (molecules with two atoms).  The smallest diatomic molecule is hydrogen gas, H2, which consists of two protons and two electrons.

Question:  Why do we abbreviate the elements on the periodic table and

where did they come from?

Answer:

Abbreviations are used probably to make life simpler!  Writing out the

whole name of an element to depict a chemical reaction just wouldn't

be practical either.  Many of the abbreviations are simply the first one

or two letters of the name i.e. "C" for carbon,  "Al" for aluminum.  Others

come from the first one or two letters of the element's Latin name i.e.

"Cu" for cuprum (copper) and "W" for wolfrum (tungsten).  So convenience

and practicality are most likely the main reasons abbreviations are used.
