Choice of Branches in IITs
Now that the IIT JEE 2009 results are out, you would be confronted with questions like "I have got such and such rank in IIT JEE. What branch and in which IIT can I get a seat?" Counselling for admission starts on June 9. So, it is the time to decide about our choices and preferences about the courses offered in the IITs. As you all know, 8 new IITs have been opened and hence the number of seats has gone up dramatically. But, the question here is about the possiblity of branches and the choice of IIT. So, let's take a look at the statistics given below and also how the seats in the IITs get filled up. The seats in the old IITs get filled up firstly since they are preferred by most of the students.
Total Seats: An estimate
The total number of seats is although 8295. However, the above figures are just an estimate. The extra 252 seats are perhaps due to the seats that were left vacant last year.
Also, there are reservations which are to be taken into account. For instance, let us see how the admissions will be going this year (i.e. 2009). Since the SC, ST, OBC and PD students have reservations, they have an upper hand in the admissions. However, all the students will be counselled rankwise. This means that the a student who is AIR 1 is free to choose a branch and an IIT of his choice. Then comes the turn of AIR 2 and then AIR 3 and this goes on and on. The choices of branches and IITs become increasingly limited for the students who are ranked lower in the CML. Therefore, this calls for a judicious decision about the preference of the branch and the IIT.
Reservation Statistics
Usually, the top rankers (like those ranked in the range 1 - 200) select Computer Science in the old IITs. And also, the top branches like Mechanical and Electrical get filled up soon, like closing ranks for these branches are quite high (it goes up to 900 or 1000 at the most) in the old IITs. So, the students who are ranked in the mid 2000s and lower (that means, 3000s, 4000s etc) have to make a sacrifice on the branches and IITs too (although some students may get through, but that number is low).
For instance, let a student of General Category with an AIR 3600 (say) is called for counselling and is allowed to fill up his choice sheet. Suppose this student wants to study Mechanical in IIT Kharagpur and fills up his first preference as "Mechanical Engineering" in IIT Kharagpur, then it is very obvious that he/she may not get it at all since the closing ranks for Mechanical branches have been very high in the last academic sessions. Thus, it is highly essential for all those who are called for counselling to have an idea about the opening and closing ranks of the various branches in the previous years. And, the situation is even worse for those ranked in the 5000s and lower. You must have heard a lot about the very brand of the IITs - the best faculty of the country, the placements and the high packages offered to the IITians. But, if you are ranked low, you may not get a branch of your choice unless you have got a reservation. So, this decision is a great decision for you and you must be very careful about this because it concerns your carrer which you cannot afford to put at stake. Mostly, the students who are qualified in IIT JEE are also qualified in AIEEE (with handome ranks too). So, if you have a craze for a particular branch but donot get it in the IITs, you must not hesitate to opt for it in any of the top NITs. If any branch in an IIT is okay for you, then you must also be mentally prepared to study it for the next four years. If you are not mentally prepared, if you think the course that you may be taking will not be interesting for you, then you must not go for it orelse it may be disastrous for you in future. Rather, you must go with the NITs or join any other good college as mentioned before.
To summarise it all, you must have an idea about the opening and closing rank of the various branches. Check them at http://www.askiitians.com/iit-jee-2009-rank.aspx. Then, you must judiciously fill up the choice sheet during your counselling. IITs are the best but NITs are also not far behind. And, there are still many good colleges all over India. Finally, I want you to wish you your best luck for admissions.
