This is called inversion imagery, why does it seem all dark if u stare at a light source? Same concept here. The dark lines tun lighter and the light coming from the white portion of the pics turns dark. Happens due to the time lag in adjustment of rods and cones in our retina. Very old trick, but cool.

it seems that the white portion in the above figure appears dark and black appears light....is it persistence of vision?
