Draw up a plan for IIT-JEE 2008..Coordinated by IIT Roorkee
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission into the seven IITs, ISM Dhanbad and IT-BHU will be conducted on Sunday, April 13, 2008.

For JEE 2008, the overall structure of the examination has been retained as was in 2007.

Co-ordinated by IIT Roorkee this year, the proposed pattern of JEE 2008 thus would still test the students for six hours in one day.

The information brochure for JEE 2008 spells out the question paper pattern to a reasonable level of clarity ? ?There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration.

Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Questions in these papers will be of objective type, which are to be answered on a specially designed machine-gradable sheet (ORS ? Optical Response Sheet) using HB pencils only. Incorrect answers will be awarded negative marks?
Two papers

IIT-JEE 2008 thus will have two three-hour papers and most likely, each of the papers will have three subsections containing questions from the three subjects - with or without prescribed sectional time limit.

It was in 2006 that the JEE was made a single-day, single-stage examination. The 2006 edition of JEE consisted of three examinations of two hours each.

The order of the examination was physics, mathematics and chemistry. Come 2007 and JEE assumed the much-needed cosmetic change with the students being inside the ?exam zone? for eight hours instead of ten hours (as in 2006).

This year?s test would witness a similar situation as JEE 2007. The first paper will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and the second from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
?Get even?

In case a student has not done well in a particular subject in the first paper, he has the opportunity to ?get even? in the next paper.

To this extent the student will find that all ?his subject eggs are not in the same time basket?. Under time-stress, it is very likely that a student will perform below par in his otherwise favourite subject. He/she has the opportunity to bounce back in the second innings - the second paper.

If the pattern of questions happens to be similar in the second paper, then most likely the student will do well in his second outing.

Mental stamina plays an important role in long-duration testing. Students need to be prepared on this front; specifically to sustain their energy levels through out the ?exam zone?. This becomes relevant in the context of the issue of ?cut-offs? taking the driver?s seat this year around.
Cut-offs

As per information sources, the minimum aggregate mark for an (All India Rank) AIR really made the difference in JEE 2007 and not the individual subject cut-offs.

The IITs have already announced the procedure for cut-offs for JEE 2008. In the light of the knowledge about the cut-offs for JEE 2007, it is quite clear that the cut-offs for JEE 2008 will be in similar lines to that of 2007. In such a case, the aggregate cut-off will play the significant role. The subject-wise cut-offs may not really play spoilsport for someone to get a good AIR
Strategy

The first two hours of each paper should ideally be spent equally on all the areas.

This would help the student go through the paper in full and attempt enough questions to clear the subject-wise cut-off.

The remaining one hour should be used by the student to attend as many questions as possible in one?s strong / easy subject.

One should also be careful about being biased about weak subjects. One person?s weak subject can be the ?easiest subject? for that particular paper. For a subject that a student thinks he/she is weak at, it could be a wrong move to just do the bare minimum and neglect the remaining questions.

Thus for an IIT JEE 2008 aspirant, it finally boils down to ensuring that one has read through the papers completely and hence recognise their own ?greener pastures? ? the strategy is to maximise the overall score. Being on the safer side of scoring above the cut-offs and at the same time boost the aggregate score for a good AIR.
Preparation

A serious aspirant may need to have a re-look at his fundamental style of preparation that he followed for the last several months.

The change which needs to be brought about is that the remaining time before the exam should ideally be spent by the students on areas where they are strong and not on learning new areas / concepts.

It is important to revise all basic formulas from all areas. The students should practice a number of model papers and try implementing the above-mentioned strategy in as many model papers as possible.
Combinations

Different types of combinations might appear as they did last year, but the basic premise of testing will, in all likelihood, remain the same. Time-honoured parameters like ?conceptual strength?, ?depth of knowledge?, ?aptitude for engineering studies? and ?analytical/comprehension skills? would definitely be tested; however for JEE 2008, the right strategy could well be a deciding factor and a key differentiator at large.
