|
|
Plants for their normal and healthy growth requires about 16 elements called plant nutrients. Out of these three elements such as carbon, oxygen, hydrogen are derived from air and water. The remaining 13 elements are supplied by solution supplied by the soil . FERTILIZERS are the substances added to the soil in order to make up the deficiency of essential elements required by the plants. Every compound containing nitrogen, phosphorous and pottassium cannot be used as a fertilizer. The essential characters are: - The element present in it must be readily available to plant .
- It must be soluble in water.
- It should be very acidic.
- It should be stable stable so that the element in it may be available to the plant for a long time.
- It should be a cheap.
- It should contain nothing injurious to the plants.
The important fertilizers are - NITROGENOUS fertilizers: It has been noticed that pH range of 7 to 8 is most suitable for plant growth.the following compounds of nitrogen are used as fertilizers :ammonium sulphate, basic calcium nitrate ,calcium cynamide ,urea.
- PHOSPHATIC fertilizers: these includes super phosphate of lime, phosphatic slag.
- Potash manures, mixed fertilizers.
