Reaction of non-metallic oxides with water
This is a type of metathesis reaction in which oxidation number remains unchanged. Non-metallic oxides react with water to give corresponding acids.
SO3+ H2O gives H2SO4.
Elements like C,N,O,P,S,Cl, Br, I are non-metals. Theie oxides are acidic oxides, because their oxides produce acids when they react with water. These are therefore called acidic anhydride. When these react with water they give back same acid from which it is produced. The following table gives a list of some common non-mettalic oxides and corresponding acids.
