oxidation nubmer
Hieee

some important steps to find oxidation states....

1st CASE ->
eg. in compoun CrO5

many will write ,

x - 10 = 0 , x = 10 .........but its wrong....Cr cannot have oxdn state more than 6

it is explained by its structure....

see in CrO5 , Cr is linked to O with 4 single bonds (peroxide linkage i.e O-O) and 1 double bond

and u shud know oxdn state of  O in peroxide is -1

so it comes out to be

x - 2 - 4 = 0 , x = +6...........(this -2 comes frm O linked with a double bond)

hope its clear.....
