p- block elements I
p - block Elements - I
GROUP 15
- ü N and P non metals, As & Sb metalloids, Bi metal
- ü N<< P < As < Sb < Bi (size )
- ü I.E.↓down the group
- ü electronegativity↓down the group but Sb ≈ Bi
- ü N2 gas, all others solids
- ü M.P. : N< P < Bi < Sb< As
- ü B.P. ↑down the group
- N : -3, +1, +2, +3, +4, +5
- P : -3, +1, +3, +4, +5
- As , Sb : -3, +3, +5
- Bi : +3 , rarely +5
- ü N forms pπ-pπ bonds. All others form dπ-pπ. P & As form dπ-dπ too.
- ü stability and basicity of EH3 compounds↓down the group(E=N,P,As,Sb, Bi)
- ü These form oxides of type E2O3 , E2O5 of which E2O5 is more acidic. acidic character ↓down the group
- ü These form halides of type EX3 , EX5. EX5 are more covalent.
- ü all of these elements form binary compounds with metals showing -3 state. e.g. Ca3P2, Mg3Bi2 etc.
- ü important compounds are dinitrogen, Ammonia, nitric oxide, phosphine etc.
- all members except N show allotropy.
