p - block Elements - II
GROUP 16(chalcogens)
ü O and S non metals, Se & Te metalloids, Po metal and radioactive
ü general valence shell configuration: ns2 np4
ü O most abudant element on earth
ü O<< S < Se < Te < Po (size )
ü I.E.↓down the group
ü electronegativity↓down the group but S ≈ Se
ü electron affinity : O <
ü O2 gas, all others solids
ü M.P. and B.P. : O<< S < Se <
ü All show allotropy
O : -2, -1/2, +1, +2 (+ve with F )
All others : -2, +2, +4, +6 (more common are +4 & +6)
ü all form EH2 type compounds whose acidic character and reducing property↑down the group. stability ↓down the group
ü These form oxides of type EO2 , EO3 . both are acidic.
ü These form halides of type EX2(except Se) , EX4 & EX6. some of these form dimeric monohalides. stability: F - > Cl - > Br - > I -
important compounds are ozone, hydrogen peroxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, sulphuric acid, sulphurous acid and sodium thiosulphate.
trick to remember : O Style Se Te(ti)Po
